Modding an old shuttle to take a new mITX board?

I've just found one of my old Shuttles in the loft (and ST61G4, socket 478 based P4), and was wondering if (with a little persuasion and modification) I could get it to take a mITX mobo?

Has anyone seen it done, or indeed done it themselves?

I've got a hankering for a small but meaty i5 or PII mITX system.

I've got a friend who is trying to mod a Cubit 5 to take a mITX board. I think hes going to struggle a little, though he is now talking about making an entirely new backplate.
I think it should be possible, you'll need to do a fair bit of cutting and it depends on where your PSU in the shuttle is located.

Providing you have space directly above the I/O slot on the shuttle to cut to allow for the higher I/O of the mITX you should be ok. You'll also probably need to drill in some mounts for the board as the stand offs won't be in the same location.

Plenty of space around the I/O panel to extend in whatever direction required, question is, what board to go for?

Might possibly go s775, assuming I can get one with 3 or 4 sata ports?

I am thinking of using a mini ITX motherboard in my Shuttle SN41G2 also.

The new Shuttle J1 can take mini ITX motherboards and this appears to be similar in size to the Shuttle G series AFAIK.
