'Modding' your car?

Just wondering about the general 'modding scene'. I've seen many-a-post where people have spent hours and hours adapting/upgrading their car and the outcome is usually stunning. But just wondering, surely it's possible to hand the keys over to a garge and they 'mod' it for you? Or is that not possible/quite rare in the UK?

If i'm making any sense.

So what exactly is your question?

Of course giving the keys to a garage and saying "mod this" is doable, just costs a fortune, and generally bypasses the whole point seeing as a lot of people mod for the fun of modding, not only for the end result.

When I was 15-16 I really thought I wanted a "modded" car, then I got around to it and realised it was a complete waste of cash.

Oh, and...

Yup, you can do that in this country too. It's a big business in this country.

However, I get more satisfaction from being creative and doing the work myself, for a hell of a lot cheaper.

If you ever goto a big "car event" such as Fast Car's, you'll see them all there with their show cars, on hydraulics etc, handing out advertisement cards.

Modding, imo there are two types:

Tasteful:

Different wheels, subtle exterior mods improving the look of the car

Non-Tasteful:

Stupid, ill fitting body kit, just looks stupid and cheep.

A local MR2 specialist garage sells / fits 'bling' packs for the engine bay :) It looks very tidy and if I had the ££ I'd send it in for some tidying!

Yes it is possible to hand a car over to a garage and for some serious ££££'s they will happily turn it into something "mad"

If I had access to all the required equipment, the expertise and finances to do it I'd love to strip down and rebuild a car, possibly replacing the engine and uprating the clutch etc where appropriate. But most peoples idea of a mod is sticking some tack to the outside that does nothing except make the car look garish.

I think its usually the case of buying bits and pieces when you have some money spare, so you usually dont have a pile of money in one go to get it all done in a tuning shop.

'Modding' is a bit vague, what exactly do you want to do?

For external appearance, a bodyshop will be happy to sort you out, and any garage will be able to fit most performance parts for you.

I don't even own a car yet, just being random.

Where are these 'bodyshops'? As i have never seen them before.

This is a vast topic. I have to be honest and say generally I dont agree. I think a lot of cars modded usually end up either way OTT or just gash. Subtle mods are the way forward and can give a stunning enhancement to the car.

A subtle bodykit (usually OEM) works wonders, Lexus lights are a strict no no, lowering a sensible amount, thats 'a sensible amount' Penski and complimenting alloys also work wonders even for Corsas :D

Round these parts there is a chap who is trying to start a modified car garage. His 'show piece' is a bright orange 206 GTi with fake dump valve, peeling tints and gullwing doors that don't shut properly plus a rear mounted spoiler that a hump back whale would be jealous of and some cheapo JVC ICE.

All in, i'd rather lay down and get run over by an ice skater with freshly sharpened blades than let any car I know near his so called shop.

I'm always amused at people who spend £5k on a 1l corsa, then another £3k modding it. I dont care if they cant afford to mod their car gradually. If you have to get transport, buy the car and live with it until you can afford a proper car, we've all been there I guess, fortunately I knew when to stop with my first car.

Have a look through the yellow pages, there's bodyshops all over the country. They specalise in car body work, be it accident damage repair, painting or fitting stuff to cars for people.

Good site Mr Penski, but your link appears to be slightly borked :)

Edit:

Damn you stealth editing at the same time :(

Hardly stealth-editing...It took me about 7 tries.
