Model Rail Way Builders here?

My dad was going to lay rail track round are garden a few years ago but never got round to doing the track but he did make a fully working scale model of a Princess Royal Class Locomotive plus tender

it's a full working steam engine which he did fire up a few times to make sure it worked

I model in N gauge.

As fox mentioned people who think its trainsets couldn't be far from the truth. The whole point about railway modelling is to get it as realistic as possible, therefore no 6x4 board with a circle of track!!

I am working on a small diesel maintenance yard, on a 4x2 piece of wood supported by a workmate at the moment!

Its a great hobby, albeit can be expensive. The loco's/rolling stock cost a fair bit to buy, but do hold their value so can always be sold on to fund new ones. In my view n gauge is the best for small spaces as even though the scale is so small the details is incredible! I will try and get some pics sorted!

would love to see some pictures of your current project and ones in the past if you have any;)

is DCC in N gauge viable now

Been considering over the last two years whether or not to go ahead and build up a set i know they can be made as expensive as you want but do seem like a good hobby. Is there anyone else on here who makes them?

I spent a fair few K ££ and 4 months building a digital one last year (for someone else). It was massive (25ftft x 16ft), built in an outbuilding which in its previous life served as a 6 car garage.

Took a long time to build properly and landscape as it was 2 levels and had a station which would take 8 coach trains which I had to scratch build.

I used a lot of the Hornby Skaledale (none of this cardboard building rubbish) in the end which is really nice but very expensive.

It's good fun planning, building and improving your own little slice of the Rail system. I still have some of the old Hornby track and a few locomotives and cars to go with them. Never set the stuff up any more though as it just takes up too much room and the attic is just too dusty and small to convert for a permanent track.

any pictures?

I still have my hornby Flying Scotsman train set, although my board and scenery (cars people hills stations etc) are now long gone.

When I get an attic I will probably be geeky enough to set it all back up, and get the paper mache on the go again!

I remember going to a train set exhibition at the SECC as a youngster, I was so so jealous of the sets that the enthusiasts brought along!!

Got a 00 guage all round my attic :) bridges and viaducts and a town and a tunnel and two stations, a goods yard, a working turntable the lot. Its great :)

I love doing the scenery and whoever says going round in a circle its a lot more complicated than that

Used to love my trainset when I was a kid....I still have all my stuff so one day I may get around to building another layout etc.I used to find the planning and building (scenery etc) the more enjoyable part :)

I read an old article by James May about his model trainset today... Weird co-incidence.

Right, I could only find a few of the earlier pics on my PC atm. The first is probably 40% into the build, the others are about 75% before the detailed landscape started. Only a couple of part of the track for now.

Was all laid on cork with the Peco flexible track cut to length and shaped for the corners to get the right curves and look.

wow looks good, that is a great outbuilding you have. I think you really need a room at least that big for 00 gauge.

If you find any completed pics post them up, from what I have seen so far I bet it is amazing.

Wow that looks amazing! You have too much time/money!!! :p

This thread made me go look for my hornby stuff, I've god loads of straights, curves etc, hardly used and I won't be for a while, thinking of baying them :o

Not my place or money, just my time and skills. Realised from my previous post sounded like mine:eek:.

Built it for someone else.
Was a modellers dream come true to have the opportunity to build it though. Another one of those tick off the list before you snuff it achievements.

That's some real impressive work there mrk1@1, I've done some modelling before, helped my granddad build his model village that was made in his gardens of his old bungalow. He built a layout back when i was about 7 though over the years of been left in the garage it went bye bye. Still got bits of track here and there though,

Just found out that I don't have to go out spending £300 now for repairs on my car so got money to spend elsewhere if i do choose to proceed, though really should speak with the parents about where i could do it. Tempting to do in the shed, though would mean a huge tidy up.

Have you decided yet if you are going to proceed,if so are you going N gauge?

Just seen this thread, it brings back memories of playing with my model railway. Just looked at the current list prices from Hornby and Bachmann and I'm in shock. A £115 loco now was only worth £80ish around 10-12 years ago when I was interested in trains. It looks an expensive hobby to back into.

Also did a bit of research on some of my limited edition stuff that I have and its around the same price now as it was, again 10 years ago. How come?

Also mrk1@1 darken that ballast down with some dark brown air spray. Wayyyyyyy to bright :)
