Modem for Smoothwall

Hi,

I am currently doing a gutting of my home network and restructuring it (its surprising how many things are on it now).

My plan is to have a Smoothwall act as my router now, but am looking for a Modem that is compatible with Smoothwall, is USB and can support a 24meg ADSL connection.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thank You.

There isn't much choice in the way of standalone ADSL2+ modems, let alone any with USB.

What are you using for modem/router duties right now, and who's your ISP?

Currently I am using a Netgear DG834G and it is currently doing all the basic modem and router duties. My ISP is O2, they did provide a Thompson Re-Branded router, but It never really functioned well with anything besides Web Traffic.

Sorry, I should have said that USB is preferred, although I could live without it.

If it's a DG834G v4 (i.e. the version with a Broadcom chipset) I'd be tempted to try that, in bridge mode, with DGTeam firmware so you can tweak the SNR margin. Bridge mode effectively means it's acting as a dumb ethernet modem, which is what you want connected to the red interface of your Smoothwall box.

If it's not a v4 I'd put the O2 box in bridge mode and use that. It's a bit more long-winded since bridge mode isn't an option in the web interface, like it should be on the Netgear, but it's how I use mine and it's flawless. This guide details the best way to do it.

I haven't used Smoothwall properly for years, the community version isn't a patch on pfSense - I'd definitely be looking to use this instead.

Thanks for the information.

Bridge Mode didn't even cross my mind, also I didn't think about the DGTeam Firmware (I did try it briefly).

Thanks for mentioning pfSense, I haven't used it before but after looking at it I might give it a shot.

:D
