Modem to Router to PC to Xbox, Need Help

I've read the sickies and looked through the Microsoft website and it's still all a different language to me, so can someone please tell me exactly what I need so I don't waste my money.

I'm not sure how my modem is connected to my router. My router connects to my PC using an Ethernet cable. I only have ONE Ethernet port in my pc.

Now my question is do I buy a card like this:

Then plug a cable like this:

Into the card in my pc and into my Xbox and they will both work, as long as my computer is on?

Or should I use this:

Another option would be to get another cable from my router, but it's in a different room quite far away and It would be a lot of hassle pulling the cable through the walls, again :(


Sorry if it's been asked over and over again but there seems to be so many options and I don't want to waste my money on things that won't work.

All help is very much appreciated :)
 
Start with your router, what have you got?

Then decide if you need a second network card in your PC or if you only need an ethernet cable from the Xbox to the router. Is running a cable is a problem, maybe your router is also wireless and you can buy a wireless card for the xobox.
 
A switch is the most efficient method of sharing the single cable to the router. The last thing you want to be doing is powering up the PC every time you want to play your xbox or swapping over the cable.
 
If the router has multiple UTP ports then there is no need for a switch.

What router do you own?
 
Router is a Belkin 4-Port Cable/DSL wired Gateway Router.

The router does have multiple UTP ports but I don't want to run another cable through the house.

I'm probably being really silly asking all these questions but I've never had much luck with networking :P
