Modem with fibre input?

As said, VM modems use coax. That wire going into the modem is not optical fibre.

I'm not sure how a third party modem will download the broadband profile from VM?

A quick search suggests DOCSIS3 modems with 8 Down/4 Up channels do exist. But I have no idea how it would work, or if.

I was hoping I could buy my own so I have control over what equipment I use. The VM provided stuff is horrifically awful... Nothing but problems...

Yeah. I agree, the superhub is super ****. Absolutely hate mine and it would be in the bin if it wasn't a necessity.

But sadly it's highly unlikely VM would allow third party modems. It would make it a lot easier to clone modems and their configs. Many parts of the VM network are already on the brink of failing, and many have already failed. One extra dodgy customer could cause the entire CATV network in the UK to self-destruct.

You might need to get creative at claiming there's a fault to get a call out. Unplug the modem and phone them saying there's no lights on it or something and see how that goes.

They will be able to tell if its unplugged to a degree. This coming from someone who has done it many a time to claim on the insurance for our equipment on another ISP

I mean leave it connected to the coax and kill the power. I can't see how they could argue that it's unplugged vs. a broken power brick.

I didn't say it would be painless :p

If VM aren't prepared to send out working equipment or permit third party modems then obtaining it by lying is the only option left.

If it doesn't work in modem mode then it's presumably faulty, and they should replace it without needing to invent imaginary faults.

Are they refusing to replace it, or are they just refusing to provide a FOC upgrade to the SH2?

So VM have confirmed there is/was an issue in your area (when they say it's been fixed it doesn't always mean it has), and the problem you've been having exactly supports that. Sounds to me like there's nothing wrong with the equipment, just the levels and load on your local area. I've had similar issues in the past.

Also, those images you posted are fairly illegible. I appreciate you might be using your phone but they aren't particularly helpful.
