Probably a stupid question, but is the BT openworld(reach) modem the only one that works with the master socket?

Every guide on the internet (wrt the UK) seems to use it, can you not use any third party modem?

Your choices for quality modems are pretty much an Openreach modem from eBay for <£30, or a Draytek Vigor 130 for over twice the price.

Confirming the above. BTOR HG612's are flipping good modems and found very cheaply online, the only real variant is the Draytek 130 but why spend 3 times the price when it won't do much of anything better?

I see, well if i were to go for one (and this is probably pointless to ask), but there are two types of power supply looking at Ebay, does it matter if its the black one or the white one?

Before you go any further understand that while the 612 is a decent modem, you may be better off with an ECI depending on your cabinet type or if you don't fancy paying £30 for a modem that used to change hands for under 1/3 of that.
