Just why?? WHY?

Seriously, the BBC wants to make a modern series about 2 detectives, why not. But why on earth do they have to make it Sherlock Holmes set in the here and now. What next I wonder... King Arthur and the Special Forces of the Dining Room Table?? , maybe Boudica , Queen of the Council Estate??. Might as well really pull the boat out and do a new series called Nelson, with Horatio Nelson as the commander of a type 23 frigate fighting against Somali pirates.

I don't have a problem with them doing a modern Sherlock Holmes, if it goes for substance and has a solid, textured storyline. If its just another ritzy, "hip" modern retelling then they can go to hell.

Just dont see the need for it to be Sherlock Holmes, are they that devoid of ideas that they cant come up with a new detective series thats got substance and has a solid, textured storyline without the need to use a name to bait viewers?

I've always considered sherlock holmes, the relationship with Dr Watson and the style of the story telling, with believable depth and substance to be timeless, the setting doesn't matter as much as the execution. What I hate is the modern retellings that are all trying to hit the "hip" high notes (for want of a better way to describe it) with idealistic dialog that just screams fake and artificial. Wish I could describe it better...

I dont know. Maybe I am just overly protective of what I consider to be classic literature.

Maybe there would be a market for this modern stuff. Knowing some of the dross that people watch I bet there would be a market for a modern version of Hamlet where Hamlet was a hip streetwise teen from the ghetto, just rocking with his mates and getting wasted and joyriding in cars, building up his gangland power til such time as he can kill his benefit swindling uncle who has been banging his mum as a protection racket on the estate :)

They could maybe throw in some explosions, gunfights and a car chase or two to keep things moving at pace.

I'd watch it!

It doesn't sound too bad, some decent writting, acting and plot would make this decent.

It can't be any worse then that Law and Order: UK Which is embarassing at best.

Can't see a problem and it can't be any worse than Data playing Sherlock Holmes in Star Trek which is set in the future.

Mind you, thats a character pretending to be Sherlock Holmes in a play within a storyline, rather than actually "being" Sherlock Holmes.

IMO, simply taking other peoples characters and saying hey..I know, we will stick this character in the modern world simply shows that the writer lacks the ability and skills required to create their own characters.

Like I say, whatever next? A James Bond movie where James Bond is played by an american teenager in high school, having to deal with teenage love and angst? :)

Why not?
It was done with Superman and Indiana Jones and no doubt other fictional characters.

Oh dont get me wrong, I have no doubt at all that it will happen. Hell if they can make a film where the US navy captures the enigma device then I'm sure there are no qualms at all about taking a literary character and shoving them totally out of scenario.

I just dont like it. Its a personal thing. I would rather writers use creativity and imagination to come up with new characters, with new personalities and new neuroses and depth than just take a whizzbang approach and grab someone elses character. Doesnt say much for the standard and quality of the writing if they must have a recognised name on the program to get people to watch it.

All just my opinion though. I doubt very much that many people agree or understand the way I feel and think about it.
