Despite being an old skool FPS player I just can't get into games nowadays. My eyesight and reactions just can't keep up and I no longer like the style of play. I haven't played properly for around 10 years. But another genre I used to play was strategy games such as the original Warcraft (the 2D one, not the MMO), StarCraft, Command and Conquer, etc. I fancy giving these a try again on my laptop (old but still quad core, 16gb and discrete Nvidia GPU of some kind).

I'm totally out of touch with games today (I'm ashamed to say that) and I look on with awe as my son frags people in FPS I don't recognise. But what are the current leading games in the StarCraft genre nowadays? Despite loving online gaming in the past I think I'm looking for offline games now.

Thank you.

Love the genre too, I enjoyed Grey Goo, take a look at that, but you could always replay C&C, The ultimate collection can be had cheap.
I fire up C&C 3 every now and again.

Supreme Commander and Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (Do NOT get Supreme Commander 2)
Ashes of the Singularity Escalation (although this might not run if your computer is a bit rubbish - check the minimum specs first)

They recently gave the original StarCraft a high res (remastered) makeover BTW.

EDIT: Listening to that soundtrack so much nostalgia - definitely one of the best soundtracks of all time.

Ashes Of The Singularity Escalation is on g2a for £3.50, steam it's £30. what's the catch?

Depends on if you trust G2A. There is a lot of information on the web about them regarding people selling stolen keys. Having said that though I did buy Ashes of the Singularity Escalation from them before I knew all of that and didn't have any problems.

found it in a humble bundle for only £11.24 with a load of other games so have gone with that instead but thanks for letting me know. if it's good i'll want to play coop so will buy from G2A then.

how do humble bunbles work? i assume once purchased i get keys for each individual games? atm i just have the payment email

Blumin heck - a 290 as minimum and 390 as recommended?

Anyone rocking either with AoS? Just upgraded to a 1700 but still using my 290.

been playing ashes today. not my cup of tea. it's ok but perhaps i'm looking for more a modern version of age of empires. i love base building, but also then using the benefits of that base to defend from big attacks as well as attack with my army

I'd 100% agree with this guy. Forged Alliance is probably the best, most detailed RTS imo in terms of graphical detail and gameplay. There are a lot of great maps and mods. I love turtle base building and FA is fantastic for that alone.

Whilst Ashes is a great game with a fantastic engine, I can't find myself liking it too much. The unit detail isn't there at all, and last I played a lot of units didn't look very diverse. That said the gameplay was pretty good.

I too miss RTS's. All these boring xp level grind FPS games are just dull and I rarely load up steam nowadays because it is full of junk. I miss RTS titles and good old RPG's.
