Age of mythology enhanced edition or rise of nations might fit the bill. I myself love a old school rts. I'm currently working my way through age of empire 3.

Is AoS a base building game like with C&C where you need to build base defences, different buildings to unlock units etc or do you just spawn units from the ships?

Thats probably because the company behind it is full of ex Westwood devs.
