Can anyone recommend a decent 650w - 850w PSU?

Its for a MSI B850 Gaming Plus with a Ryzen 5 7600 CPU, 32gb DDR5, which is for basic use, no overclocking etc.

It needs to be modular and also have 2 x 8 pin motherboard connectors, (Corsairs 650w doesnt have the 2 but some oher brands 650's do)

Price up to £100 really

From reading reviews Ive seen that Corsairs have a whine, Gigabytes can be DOA and prone to exploding caps, MSI are cheap PSU's with an MSI logo, of course for every bad review theres hundreds of good so thought I would ask here.

Also a few of the PSU's and other items im looking at on the Overclockers site say Pre Order, is there an estimated arrival date hidden that im not seeing on those items? or would I have to get in touch to ask?

I believe be quiet do a 650 version of the pure power 12M, but most PSUs have gone up to 750 now (as standard). Note the non-modular version is not the same PSU. From the datasheet, it looks like it only has 8+4, but note that motherboards with 2x 8-pins usually only need 1 to be connected.

Phantek's AMP 650 is on pre-order at OCUK, which is an older Seasonic design (pre-ATX3.0). Very well proven, with the connectors you want.

I haven't heard that Corsair have a general issue with coil whine, they make A LOT of PSUs and they're from a bunch of different OEMs. They have everything from trash tier to top notch.

MSI's PSUs are nothing remarkable compared to other brands, they have some good, some mediocre and some bad.

Gigabyte have a poor reputation mainly because of the early ones. Not sure what they're like now. I'd find it hard to recommend them.

Would suggest looking for reviews on sites look hwbusters, anandtech and TPU. SPL's tier list is a good reference for PSUs you don't recognise.

Apparently the coil whine is with the E variant of the RM models, RM650e / RM750e / RM850e etc,

The Phanteks AMP 650 sounds good and has good reviews but I've just found it on the Phanteks EOL list - Not sure if that means it probably won't be coming back?

Some of the tier A power supplies on the SPL list have notes that say certain things need "tuning" - I'm assuming that means by the manufacturer

I will have a look at those review sites you mentioned and see what I can find

It has been replaced by the AMP GH. The original AMP PSU were a good model, a re-badged Seasonic basically. The AMP 750/850watt GH is more up to date spec (not the latest though), but not seasonic based, the original AMP is not an up to date spec model. 10 year warranty for the former, 8 year for the latter. If it were me I'd buy the former unless you intend to pair your rig with a higher end GFX card.

Thanks @Grimley, unfortunately I can't find anywhere in the UK which has the original AMP 650 in stock, from Google it looks like the Seasonic model is the Focus GX-650 but that's out of stock everywhere too, can't even find anyone who has hoarded one to sell on an auction site when they're out of stock haha

Yeah, it was based on the Focus GX, but that whole line is EOL from every manufacturer that sold them (e.g. EVGA P6, Asus Rog Strix, Antec HCG).

OCUK had a restock of the original AMP (don't know how many units), which lasted maybe a month. I assume they're expecting more at some point, or it'd be removed from pre-order.

You could look at the TUF Gaming Gold, it has been reviewed a few places and did fine (apart from some unknown components).

Seasonic also have a new version of the Core that is within budget, but if this is based on the Focus V4, then it didn't review very well at hwbusters.

One point I would make is that I wouldn't buy a 650w psu. That wattage has always been in a sort of no mans land as it's too powerful for a low power system and not powerful enough for a high power system. With GPU's getting ever more power hungry I would be looking at a minimum of 750w, preferably 850w to account for any future upgrades so that you won't have to buy a new psu again because you don't have enough power.

One other thing is that just because your motherboard has a pair of 8 pin EPS sockets doesn't mean that you need to plug both in. My board has a pair of 8 pin EPS sockets but I only use one of them with my 7800x3d and have had no problems at all.
