Modular or non modular, that is the question?

Is the only difference between modular and non modular easier cable management? Also why do modular psu's have better cable management? can you simply choose the cables you need instead of having a mass of pointless cables? As you can tell i don't know to much, just trying to find some stuff out before i start my first build :o

I have a modular PSU. There are 8 sockets on my modular PSU which I am able to attach cables to. I have only attached 4. The remaining 4 are still in the PSU box rather than in my PC case. It's tidier. Better airflow. Easier to manage.

Get one.

the arguement against modular PSUs is that the power isnt as clean or something fancy like that as the modular sockets means another break in the wire.

But unless you have a thing for LN2 and getting a few more points on 3dmark, the difference is indistinguishable.

in otherwords, if you dont mind the small price premium, then modular all the way.

Taking my OCZ modXstream as an example:
the sockets are colour coded(PCIe are red, molex/sata are black), and the pins are uniquely shaped, so only one type of connector will fit into one type of socket.

long story short, peice of cake :P

Check my new build with a Corsair TX 750W ATX non-modular.

It is carnage in my case!

Modular is the best. Some people argue that the power rating isn't as clean or there's a bigger chance of failure but if you get a good quality one like Corsair, Antec or OCZ I really doubt that would happen.

Modular is also really great, I mean, I don't use Floppy connector anymore, I don't use IDE and a lot of other things that are standard with PSU's so it immediatly makes my cable management easier and improves airflow of the case.

Oh and it looks great :D

On topic if I was buying a new PSU I'd certainly go for modular. My current one looks exactly like the image above, just a bundle of cables next to the unit.

I'll get round to tidying it up at some point thought I'm sure. :)
