Modular?

modular you get detachable cables, so excess cables? don't plug it in.

Results = tidier, less cables, better air movement, lighter case.

cons? Some people claim the extra connection is bad...
 
Raymond Lin has summed it up pretty neatly, in general I think that modular PSUs are a good idea although most are split rail which can lead to issues with dual GPU systems, for the most part this isn't a problem and some PSUs offer the ability to combine the rails anyway. The other point (which I think was alluded to) is that in theory there is a (marginal) extra amount of resistance added by the modularity which will make the PSU less efficient at transferring the power to the components but I doubt this makes much difference at all.

Con - Haven't seen a modular PSU over 580W (Hiper) which is not ideal if your going crossfire/SLi (Unless I am mistaken and there are bigger models out there).

Havent had a problem using my libery as long as you distribute the connections amoung the devices evenly there should be no issue, Enermax do state though that even though some of the leads have four connectors - 2x Sata 2 x Molex you shouldnt use them connect all four to hards disks/Cd-Rom drives, but instead only use three.
 
I find it hard to believe that a PC could require anything like 700W of power.
What's the point in that PSU?

e-penis, for the most part. Who on Earth is buying the PCP&C 1 KW PSU? Anything that actually needs that kind of juice should probably have a small multitude of them for the sake of hot redundancy.
 
To put this into perspective, an X2 4800+, 2gb ram, A8n32 sli deluxe,

The reason you need a slightly more powerful psu is they don't all have enough power in the right places, and dual graphics card setups need a lot of power off the 12v rail.

But no desktop pc needs a psu over 600w atm.

My opinion of modular is that its pointless, because in most cases if your not using half the cables you should have bought a lesser psu. I've never had a psu where i've had more than one or two cables unused.
 
I've found that with Modular, my case is pretty much just as messy as with a non-modular PSU. I've now moved from my Enermax Liberty 500W to a Seasonic 600W in preparation for X1900XTX xfire.
