Mondeo 2.5T died on motorway

Oh, and he's going to do the block mod while he's at it (no extra charge, as the main cost of getting it done is the labour of getting the engine apart, apparently).

Someone has not been servicing there engine...

The condition of that water is terrible and looks like a completely blocked oil way..

Indeed. It really makes me wonder whether it was serviced at all before I bought it 2 years ago. I don't have a clue how that could happen.

It always irked me that the oil still looked quite brown after a service, I guess I know why now...

Did the oil and water contaminate each other or something?

Must have. After failing it wouldn't hold any coolant and the oil level was extremely high. Not white/chalky but it must have been coolant in it.

Was there no service history to accompany the car?

Thereby hangs a tale that I'm embarrassed to admit to :(

This was my first car purchase, my previous cars had been old hand me downs. I was changing job from one where I travelled abroad every week to one where I had a 250-300 mile a week commute with two weeks notice.

I urgently needed a car and found this one at a trader. It didn't have the service book but he insisted he was getting the service history from the place it had been MOT'd at. Come the day of purchase, he still didn't have it, but I was starting the new job in two days and urgently needed a car. Again he insisted he had spoken to the garage and they had the service history and were sending it to him. I believed him. You can guess the rest of the story.

Big lesson learned...You would have thought someone buying a car with an engine like that would be at least somewhat into their cars. I don't understand the thought process behind not servicing properly.

Some people are blind to the needs of a car...

Also some people see the service as a crazy expensive payment, when in fact if they just can't afford it they could simply change the oil and filters personally for less than £75... and an hour of their time.

I have srevived my mazda (basic oil and filters ) twice myself and once at garage to get service history proof.

Best to keep these things in good condition internally

True. I may as well do oil/filter changes myself. There is only a service history from when I've bought it.

Is that the oil diaphragm unit where the black gunge is?

They have a heater element in them - mine failed a few years back and was throwing up engine lights due to the fuse going. The gunge isn't related to that kind of failure is it? thinking if the heater went open circuit you'd not get the fuse blowing like mine did.

Yes, it's the oil filter housing. It's being replaced with a 2nd hand one from a Focus RS (has a seal instead of a diaphragm, so removing the possibility of that going in future).

Could be an explanation. Poor servicing alone doesn't seem to be enough...

Any update?

Yep, engine is rebuilt and ready to go back in. Just waiting on a correct clutch plate from Ford (they sent wrong one). Couple of pics of the build - taking a while but Gary has been really good on keeping me up to date with what he's doing.

Should have had it back on Friday, but will hopefully be early next week now when the new clutch arrives.

Finally got my car back today!! It seemed to be running really nicely, although taking it very easy for first 1k miles.

Final bill was £1940. I think it is extremely reasonable - it included:

  • Skim block, hone cylinders.
  • Skim cylinder head, vac test.
  • Main bearing set, heavy duty big end bearing set. New piston rings.
  • Used cylinder head.
  • Cylinder head gasket. .
  • Timing belt, timing belt tensioner and idler
  • Rear main oil seal. Front oil pum seal. Oil pump gasket. Sump o ring seals.
  • Water pump.
  • Head bolts.
  • Exhaust Gaskets.
  • Cam seals
  • vvt seals.
  • RS spark plug set.
  • Oil and filter first run mineral oil
  • Magnetic sump plug.
  • Clutch kit, cover and plate.
  • Clutch slave cylinder.
  • Used RS oil filter housing

Update if anyone cares

Now done two 450 mile runs, changing out the mineral oil in between. Got some fully synthetic oil put in on Wednesday. Drove it a bit harder this weekend and it felt like it was going really well.

Gary quoted me £250 labour to fit an RS clutch and intercooler, so I'm quite tempted to get that done and get a remap on it. I might take it on a rolling road first and see how well it's doing after the rebuild. There is a place nearby in Stockport that charges about £50 for a run apparently.

After having all that done i would 100% get it mapped and the intercooler done. Especially if Gary is offering good labour rates. It's always recommended on the ST forums to remap 2.5T to wake it up so I'm sure it will give the car a new lease of life and feel more fun to drive for years to come.
Was going to get my ST remapped but after losing all my coolant last month due to a split pipe and it overheating I'm not sure I trust it now. :( as I've been told it's probably stressed the head gasket.

Nasty! How long did it run with no coolant?
