Hi all

Possibly the most boring thread on the forum :D

I have a 2011 mondeo and want to get a bit more out of the headlights as they're a bit dull. They are not xenons but do seem to have the motorised reflectors that move the beam as you go around corners. It's a titanium X if that makes any difference.

I am wondering if... the "+100% brightness" bulbs I see advertised are any good and whether you can pop them straight in? If they're that much brighter do they pull more current? Can they be swapped without worrying about the wiring loom?

Anyone knows what the best ones are to get? I have seen Phillips xtreme and Osram night breaker seem popular, will they do the trick?

Finally anything non standard about the lights being on motorised reflectors that means I have to get special bulbs?

I would also be interested in upgrading the main beam and sidelights whilst I'm at it if anyone has any recommendations for those? The less 'yellow' the better as I miss my xenons! But needs to be legal.

Cheers!

They are good but don't make a massive difference - look nicer and the light is slightly whiter which helps a little bit

I use whatever's cheaper out of night breaker unlimited or extreme vision

I have just fitted Phillips +130% X-treme Vision and the difference is quite substantial (although comparing to whatever was in a '98 Corsa!).

Ordered from Powerbulbs which was cheapest at the time, discount codes floating round the net plus quidco plus free OSRAM sidelights ended up being under £20 delivered.

I just picked up a set of these for the Mini today - 18 quid collected from Eurocarparts. They seem good.

I've just found the main and dipped (H1/H7) for 35 total from amazon. Seems the best deal going! Also I see they're all 55w so no difference in power/current.

Cheers all

I can actually see where I'm going in the dark now which is handy. The full beam is especially good.

What are the issues if you fit an 80w instead of a 55w? i assume not being legal being one, but what about wiring etc?
For the record, i havent done this, just asking. i too mave a mk4 mondeo and the lights are shocking.

I had a look at this and don't think there's anything specific in the Highway Code about wattage per se, just a generic paragraph about not dazzling oncoming traffic.

However if you can get +130% on the standard 55w I suspect at higher wattages its pushing it for not dazzling oncoming traffic.

My main concern would be the current draw under the assumption that ford are probably keeping the loom 'just good enough' rather than speccing it to run higher wattage bulbs.

Despite this there seems to be a hell of a lot of cars on the road that do have dazzling headlights for whatever reason.

Glad to read this as I have loads of Phillips bulbs on the way. (two packs of Xtreme Vision +130% H7's, a pack of Silver Vision indicators, and some side light bulbs)

They are pretty pricey!!!

I upgraded the bulbs in my wife's Freelander 2 using Osram Nightbreaker Ultimate (or wherever they're called ) after one of the stock lamps blew.

I thought the improvement was pretty significant actually and worth the cost of £27 for the pair. The headlamps are projectors with a shutter for main beam (exactly like the optional bi-xenon but with standard halogen lamps) so one bulb for both dipped and main beam.

Mk4 Mondeo headlights are shocking,

although yours should at least have projector lenses I would imagine

Currently running Philips xtremes in my mk4 mondy, certainly a decent improvement

My car takes four H7 bulbs, two for dipped and two for main. :( I wish it only needed one pair as it would have saved me £20! :p

Be glad its not got H9s for the main/full beam like the NC MX5, hardly any choice of upgrade bulbs at all in that size (best available isa philips blue vision but they're only 30% brighter than stock, no extreme vision or nightbreaker equivalent available for some reason :()

RX8 owners also have that problem, you can fit H11 bulbs if you file the bit of plastic between the pins down a little, if that helps? :)

Get a couple of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/BREAKER-UNL...UTF8&qid=1450729197&sr=8-3&keywords=h11+bulbs

I would check the wattage requirements and such first though. I expect MX5-OC would know about it?

Thing is most people go the other way round, fitting h9s instead of h11s, as the h9 bulbs are a better spec like for like (h11 is 1350 lumens, h9 is 2100). I could fit a nightbreaker h11 and see if it's better than the Philips blue vision h9s I have at the moment but the bulb tech would have to make a big difference to make a h11 better than the h9...
