It's been a while since we've had a Mondeo thread, so can you tell me about these please?

The car in question is a W-reg.

This car has 168bhp from what I gather.

I'd like to know realistic MPG around town etc? 20 mpg?

Cambelt service mileage? Clutch life expectancy? (Obviously it'll vary but is there a general mileage that they tend to last?)

Are they easy to work on?

Any other general info would be great, just reading around on Honest John and people say the Ghia X is the same but minus the bodykit and with more options like climate control etc.

Thanks!

No cambelt, its a chain. Low 20's around town. 168bhp. Ghia X is the same car minus the bodykit and Sport suspension but plus leather, cruise, etc etc.

Got an X reg myself, I try not to think about Fuel costs though :p
I tend to get around 280-300miles before filling up again, about the same as the 2.0 I had before.

I'm not too knowledgeable about the car really - but I love mine and it sounds awesome. Although I'm now starting to want more power. lol

Filling it from near empty (I'm really not sure how much is left in the tank - don't want to risk finding out the hard way) I can spend over £60. Most recent tank was 56 litres at 112.9p

Mine was very thirsty, if you can live with that then they are great cars to own!

Mine was pretty much faultless and munched up the miles in it's stride!

Had mine for just over a year, coming up for 90k paid £1200 for it. Never bothered working out the MPG but im guessing its low 20's, quite a thirsty car. About £60 to fill up and with a mixture of motorway and stop start in traffic I get around 300miles to the tank if i drive sensibly.

From PH

Very good car bags of room and good performance to suit. As already said check the front bushes as these tend to wear out easily. Check the rear droplinks these also go . Changed all mine for the mot last year. Check that the secondaries open you can either drive the car and when you accelerate you should feel a surge at about 3500 rpm ish or if you look into manifold under the throttle body area you should see the arm moving when the car is revved if it doesn't do this the IMRC module has probably failed and will need replacing ford reatil at about £150 for the unit and again easy to fit but you can find them in greakers etc or ebay. service history a must check the air condtioning mine needed re gassing. Water pumps fail as said but replacement with metal impellor easy to source and a breeze to fit. Drivers side electric seat adjusters can fail. Apart from that engine and gearbox are very good providing looked after handling is very good for a bigish car fuel consumption not bad good on motorway as you would expect. A bargain car if you can pick up a well looked after one.

Just out of interest, how much is the one you're looking at?

It's up for £1700 but we're looking at doing a p/ex deal of some sort.

Part of me is thinking about getting a Ghia though? The ST doesn't seem to have much kit, but then it does look nice!

Problem is, the ease of this swap would save me a lot of hassle and my time is limited.

I'm in two minds about the petrol situation really, I can afford it but it seems like a pretty poor MPG figure for a car that isn't really that quick but having said that I don't really drive fast on public roads anyway....

As this is pre-2000 the tax will be £205 which is not bad really. I do fancy a Mondeo though and I don't really do that many miles and will be doing a couple of longer journeys every month (well 1hr+) so cruise would be nice.

Seem to be quite a few on PH for around that price. We have not really discussed prices or anything yet as my 5 has broken down so we're going to see what's what and go from there.

Dumb ? but what does RSAP mean or stand for?

EDIT: Googling seems to suggest that it's the body kit, presumably RS AP?

£1700 seems very expensive, I only paid £1350 for an immaculate 1998 V6 Si 4 years ago! Good cars for the cash although fuel consumption is abysmal considering the average performance - it wasn't much more economical than the scoob I own now :(

Yeah I'm thinking that too. Tricky situation if the majority of the cars that I can see are around that price, but we'll see, have other priorities to sort first.

Making me realise I got mine for a good price. Paid a grand for an X reg with just under 90k on the clock.
Makes up for the fact I paid way too much for my previous car and now am struggling to sell it at a fraction of the price I paid :(

But that was an Si not an ST24. Whilst on paper they are very similar, in the market they are perceived very differently. Many people will cough up the extra 500 quid for the 'proper' ST. This is why Ghia X's were such good value despite being arguably a better car.
