Aye, the golf diesels ive driven have a very distinct power band, much like a two stroke engine.
The Fords feel like they have quite a flat torque and power curve.

No.

I agree they have a wider power and torque output but I disagree that they don't feel like they are putting out the rated power and torque. Driving a 2.0TDCi against a 130 Passat back to back the Mondeo pulls harder and for longer. The VAG has a big torque spike between 1800 and 2.5k then falls away. The Ford has a fairly flat torque "curve" between 2000 and 3500RPM, but the power is still building as the revs rise. The BMW 4 cylinder diesels deliver their power in much the same way.

In any case, I found both the 2.0 and 2.2 were much nicer to drive than any of the VAG PD units.
 
why not just get a passat 1.8T?

and yea the Mondeo TDCi are cheap now, and how cheap are they going to be in a few years, do residuals make any difference to your purchase plans?

Yes, that what i am saying.
nice and flat, linear, a bit dull.
For me that is, me personally, thats me, not you, who doesnt have any right at all to decide what opinion i hold about something for right or wrong regardless of the opinion you hold, i find modern ford diesel engines "a bit dull"

I prefere the VAG units, because they have a bit of life in them.
End of Story.
 
dude, if you've got points n stuff and you're having trouble getting insurance dont be so quick to think you have to have a diesel... i was thinking that recently while looking at insurance for a mitsubishi carisma

and then you can see what group insuracne diferent cars come under, i was suprised for find that the 1.9TD was more expencive to insure then the 1.8 GDI even though the GDI hat 30bhp more and can get from 0-60 over a second faster o_o'

either way they're both about the same to insure as my 1.8 fiesta diesel (mk 3) which i think is a really nice car, it's got a mechanicaly timed engine! :p (clockwork injection) so it just doesnt go worong and it can rev really high! i can get 110 out of it (take about 5 minuets to accelerate to that speed) and i can comfortably cruze down the motorway at 90mph with all my m8s and our luggage and i can get from north wales to ashford on less then 30 liters of diesel
 
The reason I want the diesel is neither for economy or exclusively for cheaper insurance, it's because I think it's the best engine in the range for driving style and ability. My current car does has 180bhp so if I downgraded to a bog standard petrol unit I can guarantee I'd become bored very quickly. The diesel 'feels' faster and is in general much more of a pleasure to drive. The economy will be an added bonus, especially on my frequent long drives back to Ireland!

The Passat 1.8T isn't really an option because insurance on it is just as bad as my Toledo. :(

I've been doing the sums and with the Mondeo I'll be saving around £1500 a year in insurance alone. I'm also going to pay off the finance on my existing car with a much lower APR loan, so I'll be saving a good bit on that too, not to mention fuel costs.
 
have only driven a tdci for a short while, was a courtesy car a few years back, so brand new. was impressed at how well it drove, but the stupid indicator ticking noise drove me mad, probably why ******** mondeo drivers never indicate.

ive been in many mondeo tdci taxis, when those things get high mileage they tend to sound a lot rougher than your equiv VAG diesel. i used to have a 51reg A4 with 145k miles, sounded as fresh as a new one would.

the tdci engines dont seem to last as well

bloomin ek i think u need a bew insurance company! 1500 on top of a mondeo fro a passat? i wouldnt have thought the passat would be more than 1500 on its own!
 
My Toledo costs £1500 a year more than the Mondeo. Having looked at insurance quotes for the Passat 1.8T it works out at about £8-900 more expensive.

Just out of interest I did the quotes without the CD10 + 4 points. Here are the results, first ones are with the points specified and second ones are without.

Toledo 20VT Sport - £3490 and £800 excess - £1950 and £250 excess
Mondeo TDCi 130 Zetec S - £1870 and £500 excess - £1030 and £250 excess

Whatever you do DON'T GET A CD10!

Depends entirely which model of engine it is, the 2.0 TDCi is available in a number of different specifications.

No, it's available in two - 115 and 130. The 130 is the one worth buying.
 
A friend of mine took me out for a quick blast in his TDCi about about a year ago.

To say I was impressed was an understatement. I just didn't expect it to throw me back in the seat like it did. :cool:

Interior was pretty nice too!

For some reason, around the 2005.5 facelift Ford introduced a 90PS version of the 2.0 TDCi to the UK market, available only in LX trim.

There was a TDDi 90 but that was never sold in the UK, we only got the 115.

Nope, tis a TDCi. I was quite surprised myself, I also had the same initial reaction that it must be the old TDDi unit.

Maybe not in the Mondeo but that unit was used in the Focus. I had one for 3 years :(
