Looking at similar models from say 2002 on a 52 plate, the Mondeo 2.0TDCI 130bhp and the Superb 1.9TDI PD 130bhp. They are both available with a decent specification for between £6k and £8k depending on condition with the Skoda maybe £500 more all else being equal.

So which makes the better large diesel used car purchase and why?

I had a Superb on loan from a dealer for a couple of days a while back and I thought it was a very nice car. However, its a big car and is heavy and I thought the 130PD felt a bit underpowered pulling around something so big. Like the Passat it's based on, it's most definitely a cruiser and there's little reward for trying the throw it around tight back road bends at speed where it pitches and rolls with plenty of understeer. The ride is a little bouncy over rough surfaces but silky on the motorway. If that doesn't bother you, you get a car that will seat 5 adults in comfort with a massive boot, plenty of equipment and a good quality finish.

With the Mondeo you get something that feels far more nimble and light on its feet - you don't feel like you are driving a big car. The suspension is firmer but it's very well damped so it doesn't bounce. All the controls have more feel, with the exeception of the brakes, and you know exactly where the limits are. The 130 TDCi is a great engine, although it will be a couple of mpg off the PD. The torque band is wider which makes it easier to drive day to day as it doesn't have the all-or-nothing power delivery of the PD engine. Its also chain driven so there is no cambelt to change or snap. Fit and finish are very good on the Mk3 and I've not had any reliability issues with the 2 I've had. The 6 speed facelifted versions are best but will be towards the top end of your budget, however you get more kit, a revised interior, different rear lights, new front bumper etc and IMO are worth the extra.

As to which makes the best purchase, it all depends what you want. If you like driving I reckon you'll prefer the feel of the Mondeo, if you're into crusing around in an armchair and need masses of rear legroom then the Superb will probably make more sense. I suggest you try out both of them and take it from there.

We have the Superb 2.5 V6 TDI with a manual box and full leather. Had it for about 18 months / 2 years and not had a problem with it at all. Its fast and luxurious. Id have one over a mondeo but i know fox will be here soon :p

I have had a 130 bhp Superb Elegance however the engine is underpowered for what it is. It would be a lot better if you could stretch to a 2.5TDI V6

Thanks for the replies - good information. It's not for myself, just someone I was talking to recently. Personally I think the Mondeo is the way to go due to better handling...

the skoda shares a platform with the A4 and Passat, but the Skoda comes with a much better warrenty.

i know from experiance that the A4s and Passats last well past 140-150 kmiles.

can the same be said for the mondeos?

had a mk1 94 modeo with 80k on there (year ago) and it was rattling like a tool box and the seat was losing its shape, hence id stick with the better brand

I wouldn't call that comparison particularly valid really. You're comparing a 12 year old car with modern cars. The build quality on the mk3 is apparently in a completely different league to the mk1 cars and I'd have thought it was virtually as good as the Superb. VAG quality seems to be falling at a time when Ford's is improving.

i was meant to say it was years ago, the car was only 4 years old or so and it had not lasted well at all. infact no high mileage Fords ive had or been in have lasted well

Comapring build quality is somewhat dubious due to luck of the draw, how well a car has been looked after etc.

When I sold my last Mondeo (with 130k miles on it), it had less squeaks and rattles than my mum's 25k Toyota.

I also had a comment from the bodyshop where it went to have some work done after someone reversed into me that it was in amazing shape for the age and ran beautifully smooth.

When I had it on the rolling road it also put out 136bhp (official figure was 130bhp). Not bad for a car having done 130k miles, the last 25k of which were by me and I drove it pretty hard.
