Monitor and GFX Upgrade Advice Please :)

I think it is now about time to upgrade my getting rather old monitor and gfx card. Looking at the deals coming up black friday etc it's possibly a good time!

The card is just about doing BF1 at high which I mostly play and the monitor although great in it's day with the 8800 gtx is probably getting a bit old hat now looking at the new technology out now ( Ultrasharp DELL 2407WFP ).

I have just purchased a Razer Blade laptop for travel and cant believe how bad everything looks and runs on the desktop now!!

My processor does not support PCIE-3 apparently but don't really feel the need to upgrade the motherboard and processor quite yet. Unless I can be convinced otherwise.

So whats caught my eye is a 580

So with this I assume I need to have a Freesync monitor? Or does it not matter? Been out the game for a while so could do with all the advice I can get.

I could maybe get away with a 27" but space is quite limited on the desk.

Any advice for a monitor from anyone before I order today? I've just read a thread about similar decisions on 580 / 1440p combination is not recommended. Any help would be much appreciated :)
