Hello

I have an old set of Monitor Audio MR4 floorstanding speakers in Black Oak (had them about 6 years now) and just have a little itch for a bit of an upgrade. I saw a pair of Monitor Audio Bronze 500 floorstanding speakers for £499, which compared to other outlets is very cheap (places like Peter Tyson / Richer Sounds are nearer £1k). I was wondering if a pair of these, with the additional dolby atmos speakers on top, would be a nice little upgrade? I've not used any sort of height / ceiling reflection speakers before. Are they a fad, or would I notice them?

My AV Receiver is an old Denon AVR-X2400H but on checking the manual it apparently will support these additional height speakers, albeit I can't enjoy dolby atmos on anything less than a 5.1 setup. But apparently I can still use DTS:X with them. In the future, I could upgrade the AV Recevier to say the Denon AVC-X3800H. That would allow dolby atmos on less than a 5.1 speaker setup, as long as "speaker virtualisation" is enabled, according to the manual.

So I guess to summarise, would I see any perceivable benefit / audio enjoyment at the moment from adding on the height speakers to a simple stereo Bronze 500 setup? And also I guess, any first hand experience of the Bronze 500 floorstanding speakers?

Cheers.

I would recommend ceiling speakers, then heights, then upfirers. I've only had limited use of upfirers and didn't much of them. Better to mount regular speakers or angled speakers on the wall as high as possible.

As for those Monitor Audio speakers I don't know

Thanks for your thoughts.

In your opinion, what would be classed as an "upgrade" against the MR4 floorstanding speakers I currently have?

Keeping to Monitor Audio? Silvers I guess.

Plenty of other brands though, Wharfedale, Fyne, Kef, Arendel, B&W, Dali, Dynaudio, Focal, Klipsch, Polk, M&K,Celestion, NHT, Ruark, JTR, Powersound, Ascendo, Jamo, Mission, XTZ just a few brands off the top of my head.

Ascendo, Perlisten, Monoprice, Wilson Bench, Neat, Magnaplanar, PMC, Martin Logan, Yamaha, JBL, ATC, KII, Definitive Technology.

Buy them all, every model from each brand, and in each and every colour and finish.

Budget wise personally I'd be sticking with standmounts, maybe second hand Wharfedale Evo 4.2.

better standmounts over floorstanders anyday. If you have a bigger budget like £1000 minimum then start looking into floorstanders. £500 floorstanders will be a bit budgety, and won't have bracing and build of a better floorstander.

Good price. Maybe too low? So check for damage etc

Two hour car ride from newcastle to edinburgh so it's doable.and you'll be saving a lot of money

Thanks again - Lots to think about. Yeah it's a alright drive from Newcastle to Edinburgh. Not bad at all. Would be better if they dual the A1!

I've also been reading up on the MA Silver 300 (G7). (as you suggested earlier if sticking with Monitor Audio)

The Focal 826D have upfirers built into them.

Best to go for proper ceiling/height rather than compromising on upfirers, getting the best main speakers, rather than compromising with ones with built in for the cost. Plus you're stuck with them. If you bought bookshelf for heights, you could reuse them elseware like bedroom system, get angled heights, or if you upgrade your heights or go proper in ceiling.
