Monitor colour calibration tools?

No monitor is ever going to be calibrated out the box and there's a simple reason for that! it's because calibration has to be done at the user end because a few variables affect the calibration process from monitor panel characteristics to graphics card used and graphics drivers used.

That is why :)

Point taken, but i have had tones of monitors before and have never seen such bad results out of box. I understand that if you totally anal about colours then yes, go ahead and spend hours getting colors etc 'just right', but i do not think that an end user should have to faff about with calibration to drastically improve something that should have been taken care of in first place.

Well unless something that manages colour or the gfx card desktop settings was running etc I don't see how colours could be that bad out the box! I've certainly never seen this happen on a stock setup on any TFT but after my old man installed the Samsung software for his old 940BW colours started to change by themselves which was cack :p

Sounds like the 226BW i just returned. Had horrible bleed at top and bottom. Bring back the CRT's lol.

mines not a big spot, but it annoys me to know i payed 450 quid for a monitor which should imo be perfect for that price. Sigh they make it so much hassel its not worth sending back.
As for the colour, well im no expert but it seems incredible. Even the presets are impressive. i was watching lord of the rings and fiddling with the colours. I use the photo setting for doing day to day busness and writing is really crisp and dynamics for gaming and films or standard, that gives a good gaming picture too.

But as for having to change with the red blue and green. Ive not noticed any imperfections in colour so i gues there isn't any point in me fiddling. It may not be perfect but i cant tell as i have nothing but an old 19" to compare it too.

It's disappointing that you can go and spend £400+ on a monitor and it's not calibrated out of the box. I have just sent a 226BW back to OCUK because i will unable to correct the haxed colors :( I too tried to calibrate using software, calibration pictures and even color profiles and i made it worse. Lol, perhaps my eyes are going?

It takes me a good few days to calibrate a new monitor,, I get it roughly right, then I fine tune it over a few days on the monitor and graphic card controls to get it spot on right.

Maybe my eyes are on the way out (i'm only 25 lol), but when i tried to calibrate the 226BW i just made everything worse lol.

I cant believe you sent the 226bw back, I would kill for one. At the end of the day all monitors look quite rubbish when you first get them, and for me like I said, it takes a good few days to get them how you want them to be, contrast and briteness wise that is. Ive found that it isnt enought just altering it on the monitor, it need tweaking on the graphic card controls too.

I picked up a Pantone Huey to go with my 245T. Very good piece of kit, and only cost £50.

I've used it to calibrate both of my laptops and all 3 monitors in my household. The Huey also automatically adjusts the colours according to ambient room light, which is pretty good.

Looks like it might be worth buying a patone huey, when i get a new monitor if i wanna get the best out of it. cheapest ive found it is around £60

Price has gone up since last month.

Bought mine for ~£50 incl p&p, but the same place has is now selling it for £65. Bummer.

I have owned plenty of monitors and this is the first time i have ever seen a new monitor with incorrect colors. I agree that you need to make contrast / gamma adjustments (which i did), but having to adjust the red, green and blue should not be necessary.

If *** monitor is half decent it will have RGB presets, set it to 6500K and you will get close enough values for everyday usage and you'd be plenty happy. Preset 650K values may be 200-300 values +/- off from actual 6500k as it all depends on "that" panel characteristics since no 2 panels are exactly the same even if they are the same model and revision.

i think you guys are all crazy. Paying £50 on top of a £200 purchase!!!!

As a %age, it's not too much on top of the price for a 245T, and a worthwhile investment if you're genuinely that concerned about correct colour interpretation.

Plus you're not restricted to using it on just one monitor. I've calibrated 5-6 screens with mine now.
