I have a Dell 2005FPW 20in monitor that I have had for a few years now.

I want to upgrade as the back light is starting to bleed through along the top ( well its always done this, but its getting worse ) and there is a lot of choice at the moment. I use my system for gaming and as my TV.

So, I thinking of a 22in or possibly 24in monitor. Obvious problem with the 24in is that my newly acquired second hand 7900GTX, is gonna struggle with a 24in screens res, so how bad does a 24in screen look running at 1680-1050 ?

And what is the score with the different screen types ? I was looking at the Samsung's and there seem to be a lot of similar models. What would people recommend ?
 
It doesn't look right on my 2407wfp when fullscreen and not in native res, but if you do the 1:1 mapping thing it looks fine but obviously has the black border around.

Which screen to go for should really be dictated by what sort of games you play or what general use it'd be for. Be a bit silly to recommend someone really really into first person shooters to get a 2407wfp, just as it would be recommending someone who plays world of warcraft to get a samsung 226bw :) as these really aren't each individiual screens strong point.
 
At the moment I motley play, COD4 Bioshock, HL2, Crysis Demo ( bloody hard by the way) so into FPS really. And I watch TV and DVD's on it.

Like the idea of the 24in for the media stuff.
 
Anyone know anything about the Dell TrueColour E248WFP ?

Anyway, which 22 and which 24 monitor would people go for, for my uses ?

remember mine has backlight bleeding along the top and bottom corners of the screen, and is 3 years old now lol so most things are going to be an improvement.

E248WFP is a cheaper panel version of the 2407wfp.

Depends if your the type to notice "ghosting" on your current screen. If you are you'd definitely be after a 2ms overdrive 22" like the samsung ones. If you don't notice it on your current screen then maybe the dell 2407wfp because its just the daddy :) huge wow factor and only 5% of people seem to notice it ghosting somehow :rolleyes:
 
My current dell has a 15ms response time and I don't notice any ghosting so I am probably unlikely to. However that Dell one is a little pricey, compared to a Samsung SM-245B 24.
 
Well you'd probably fine the dell 2407 feels very similar to your current one from a responsiveness pov, and if thats no issue you'd no doubt love the extra size.

This is just my opinion!! but the SM-245B is tn-panel based so it'd lose the colours / viewing angles of the more expensive 24" screens while also losing out on the overdrives which make some of the 22" panels a very realistic "best" option for gamers. Shame the 2407wfp is so expensive :)

GT junkie needs to post a reply :p pretty sure he has a 24" tn-panel lcd.
 
The viewing angles on mine are pretty good and that must be a TN panel, so what I really need to do is go and find one at PC world or such and have a look. Trying to decide between 22 and 24, there is about £40 difference between the 226cw and the 245b so it comes down to how the 245b copes with a lower resolution or if dropping AA and such lets my 7900GTX get smooth frame rates at the higher res.
 
No the 2005fpw has a philips s-ips panel, basically the best viewing angles you can get. TN will be a lot worse.
 
ah ok then, mm so maybe a good 22in for the same money would be better or splash out on that dell. So which is the "best" 22in model? the Samsung 226cw looks nice ? and is more my price range which is about £300 tops.
