Monitor conundrum

Hi,

I have a modest pc, i5 8400 and gtx 1060 8 gig. I'm very happy gaming at 1080p but feel my 24" screen is a bit small so would like to upgrade to 27".

Nearly everywhere I read is that 1080p will look terrible on 27" and that it's recommended to upgrade to 4k. The issue is that my pc will struggle with 4k. So in order to upgrade my screen I need to upgrade my gfx card too which I can't afford.

So I'd like to hear from anyone who thinks gaming on a 1080 27" monitor might be worth it? I'm not a graphics whore at all so maybe it wouldn't bother me?

Thoughs, ideas and suggestions are welcomed! Thank you

2560x1440 is also the sweet spot not needing very expensive graphics card next time when you buy one.

Do you prefer dimmer lightning/dark room, or normal room illumination?
IPS is better for normal light level with consistent response times but can't match VA's image in darker room.
(which again has some "challenging" transitions)

Thanks for the replies, so I will need a new graphics card for 1440p? And shouldn't waste my time with a 27 inch 1080p monitor?

I mostly game in the evening so reasonably dark room.

Go 1440, I did and my card, and PC spec is similar to yours. You may have to drop settings from ultra to high, or reduce the hz, maybe down to 120hz or 60hz.

Way I figure it, a monitor should last through a few PC upgrades, so may as well buy one that will last.

I'd still go for an IPS monitor, that for me looks nicer than the increase from 1080 to 1440, although coming from a 27" 1080 VA screen, I'd say they both kinda go hand in hand, so make a nice upgrade.

Any recommendations on a 27 inch monitor that won't break the bank then? I'm considering selling my gtx 1060 and getting something that will be able to run 1440p.

What's your budget?

With discount codes the Dell S2721DGF can be had for around £330-£350.

Best performance to price gaming monitor available at the moment IMO.

You need to mention usage. If you ask me 27 inch would be awful for online fps games. Thats why 24 inch looks small its all in your FOV. And if you can see pixels on 1080 24 inch what do you think 27 inch will be like? Id be careful personally lots have hated 1080 27 inch.

Certainly 4K is a brain killer. It's way, way to fine for 27". 1080P at 27" is pretty poor. What I tend to do is go for 1440P but even then I find it strains my eyes a little. A perfect compromise for me is 1440p with a 125% scale set in windows. Honestly though if you are pretty happy with the 24" monitor then I wouldn't change it. There is no way back with monitors and if you really want to stress your graphics card then perhaps the best way to do it is to get a monitor with a higher refresh rate instead of changing the size or res.

this.. 4k on a 27inch monitor means everything will look tiny. If you do it get used to having your nose touching the screen while gaming haha

If you ask me 1440p monitors are affordable enough nowadays, obviously depending on budget. I have a 27" 1440 and was using a 1660 Super, it was good enough for me. I did have an LG 4K and returned that as it wasn't really what I needed.
