Alright All,

So come Jan I am buying a new gaming PC (2 x Nvidia GTX 680 SLI). However one thing I am unsure on is what monitor to get.

What I'm looking for is a monitor that has crisp picture for different genre's of games (FPS, RTS, RPGs Etc). The quality of the images is what I am after.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I am going for a Triple Monitor setup (not a single one)

I'm not entirely sure if the resolution of the IPS would be more beneficial than the 120Hz refresh rate.

The monitor does not need to be 3D as this does not really interest me and would only be an extra feature.

I have been looking at 3 however if better ones are known I'm open to suggestions.

The monitors I have in mind are:

Asus PB278Q 27"

Dell UltraSharp U2711 27"

Asus VG278H 27" TRUE 120Hz 3D

Now there is reasoning behind my choices.

Asus PB278Q 27" (2560x1440 IPS 60Hz)
This monitor has a great resolution of 2560x1440 and I have read that IPS monitor displays are crisp and the picture looks amazing.

Dell UltraSharp U2711 27" (2560x1440 IPS 60Hz)
Same reasoning as the Asus just a choice between the 2.

Asus VG278H 27" TRUE 120Hz 3D (1920x1080 TN 120Hz & 3D)
This monitor doesn't have ability of a high resolution like the other 2 however it makes up for this with 120Hz and 3D capabilities.

You cant really compare the PB278Q with the U2711. The PB278Q uses a standard gamut while the 2711 uses wide gamut. The 2711 is aimed for professionals that need better collor production. You should compare the PB278Q with the U2713HM. I went from a 120hz to a 60hz screen and i do notice a big difference within games but its not like many people are saying that once your used to it you will never go back. Atleast thats my opinion. I take IPS and high res over 120hz tn anyday.

Oh I'm not compairing per say, its just options as I'm not all that savvy when it comes to monitors...

The Monitor will be purely for gaming and I forgot to mention that I am going for a Triple Monitor setup (not a single one)

Ya i didnt read your first post correctly im sorry. Well if its only for gaming then you should definitely go for a 120hz monitor but there's not many choice you have with 120hz monitors. You have an nvidia vga so the VG278H sure is a nice choice. Imo they cost a bit to much but if you got the money why not go for the best. There's also a 144hz asus VG278HE

I have seen that 144Hz Asus monitor however it does not come with the 3D pack & glasses so i would have to buy that separately.

To add to that these monitors do only have a res of 1920x1080, however does the 120Hz make up for the fact they don't have a res of 2560x1440

The 144hz is basicly to provide 72 fps each eye to improve 3d and its doesnt really improve 2d gaming so its kinda useless anyway for you couse you aint interested in 3d.

I cant help you with deciding whats better for you 120hz or 2560x1440. Its all personal preference. I prefer more pixels (sharper image) and more workspace but maybe thats becouse im not a hardcore gamer. You gotta figure that one out yourself :)

If you want triple monitor I suspect it'll struggle to run 3 1440P monitors at reasonably high detail settings - that's a heck of a lot of pixels to push. You'll need 4GB model 680's minimum, 3 of them to be sure. This is what I'd do if I had the spare cash ;)

Given that, I'd go with 3 x 120hz panels, even then you may no be able to run with settings maxed out due to vram limitations if you buy 2GB 680s.

Personally I think 27" is too big for 1080P triple display at normal computer viewing distance - I'd downsize to 24" so that pixels are less noticeable but that's me.

My recommendation:

(a) Go for 1080P 120hz 24" monitors

or

(b) Buy 3 x 680s with 4GB ram and 3 of the Asus 27" monitors. Or get Samsung S27B970D 27" Widescreen Ultra Thin LED Professional PLS Monitor - Matte Black if you can afford them ;)

no it doesn't... some people prefer 120hz but for me I'd go with 1440p over 120hz every time

if you are getting 1080 screens and 2 680's then don't both with 4GB versions as 2 680's can't push 4GB of VRAM

if you are getting 3 2560 screens then you will need much more than 2 680's
you could save a bit of money by going with 670's but I would get 3 or even 4 if going with 2560 x3 and then you will need 4GB versions

I have a U2711 coming tomorrow to replace a 120Hz Asus VG236H that I've been using since it was released almost a few years ago.

I don't have too many issues playing games on my friend's VA Dell monitor, and that supposedly has a lot more problems pertaining to input lag and pixel response times than the U2711, but I'll post back tomorrow evening after I've had chance to try out some video, some internet browsing and maybe an hour or two of some Borderlands or Torchlight or something.

So At the moment I'm looking at getting 2 x 4GB EVGA GTX 680 from the start and adding another one 3 months down the line when funds are there :-), This also includes adding another 1 or 2 monitors (taking it to 3 total).

So for me its a tossup between 120hz or Resolution higher than 1080.

I'm actually swaying towards the Asus VG278H 27" TRUE 120Hz 3D. It doesn't have the top resolution but it does have 120hz.

From what i have found, when buying a monitor you either go for high Hz or High Resolution really and you have to make the choice between which one your after.

Would 2 x 4GB EVGA GTX 680 Be good enough to run the 3 Asus VG278H 27" TRUE 120Hz 3D or would it be best to get 3 of them?

Thankyou for your continued help

Besides the higher resolution you would also get better viewing angles with IPS. So it eliminates color shifting when you setup your 3 screens. You can place them in any angle you want. Ya i know man monitors... its a hard choice :D

I'm really liking the look of this monitor Asus PB278Q 27" (2560x1440 IPS 60Hz), not seen many reviews of it, just the ncix one so I'l wait until it's released and get some good user reviews, but looking promising, on a side note - would my 7950 (in sig) be enough to run the display (I'l plan on over-clocking it if that helps)

The Asus PB278Q 27" does look nice and with a Resolution: 2560x1440 its defo in my list :-) .

What your saying is that if I want 3 monitors at 2560x1440 I will need 3 x 4GB EVGA GTX 680 ? or would 2 be enough.

Loving my Dell UltraSharp U2713HM I highly recommend it.

Me too. I had been running 3 x Samsung 120hz 3d 24"ers in eyefinity but spent more time fiddling with settings and powered display port adapters than actually playing games or anything else. So sacked them off (currently sat under my desk gathering dust) and bought a U2713. Am actually enjoying things much more and the extra picture quality I would take over the 120hz any day. Don't get me wrong when it worked the eyefinity was immense for certain games but just a pain in the ass for others. If i get a 790 next year I may go back (three DVI dual link on one card if its like the 690).

And 3D was amazing the like 5 times I used it.... :p

In VRAM terms, 2 x 4GB is enough. The issue is "can it move it all fast enough" and I'd say probably not but if you want to play safe get two and test it out. If you cant get a high enough FPS with your desired graphics settings then buy a 3rd.

So i have read quite a bit on "gtx 680 4gb 7680x1440" and from the looks of it, even if i get 3 x 4GB 680s I will still have issues with average 40FPS average, with max settings and AA as they don't have the power to push 7680 x 1440 at 60fps average.

That being said people have also been saying it works, So I'm at a slight wall here lol.

@ Covenantuk, You make a valid point and it seems that's the way i might go, get 3 monitors at 2560x1440 and just add get a 3rd G card if it isnt perfect.

But that being the case I'm now stumped on what monitor I should get lol... Looking for one thats IPS / PLS @ 2560x1440 and around the £500 mark (per monitor). There are a few i have seen.

Asus PB278Q 27"
Dell UltraSharp U2711 27"

Or any other Monitors that can be suggested, I will be getting them in Jan, so release date can be wider :-)
