Monitor dilemma - ultrawide

I've decided I fancy a change from my standard 16:9 Samsung P2450's which I've had in a 3 monitor setup for a while now.

Ultrawide seems to be the way to go, but having ordered and tested an LG 34UM95 from o/c, I've found the resolution is just too intense and makes working from outlook (old version), word/excel documents and general web browsing difficult due to the small text. I tried changing relevant zoom settings etc but they all compromise icons and images in one way or another, and let's face it, why should I!

I've then spotted that LG also do a 34" (34UM65) with the lesser resolution of 2560x1080 which might suit better, but I wanted to know if this would result in a similar font size etc to what I have now (16:9 1920x1080) and given that 2560x1080 is normally used in 29" monitors, will it look terrible on a 34"?

The reason I'm opting for a larger ultrawide screen is that the 29" ultrawide's look a bit lacking in height and the real-estate may not be enough for my needs and I'd then have to get two, which I'd prefer to avoid as I'm hoping to return to a one monitor setup.

PS - I use the monitor(s) for work and pleasure, so a mix of email, documents, web browsing, web/graphic design, gaming and films so a good all rounder is needed!!!

A 24" 1920x1080 16:9 monitor has a 0.2767mm dot pitch and 91.79 pixels per inch.

A 34" 2560x1080 21:9 monitor has a 0.3108mm dot pitch and 81.72 pixels per inch.

The pixels on this 34" screen are ~112% the size of your 24".

A 34" 3440x1440 21:9 monitor has a 0.2316m dot pitch and 109.68 pixels per inch.

The pixels on this 34" screen are ~84% the size of your 24".

Thanks, but what does that generally mean? That the 34" quality will be less than the existing 24" monitors I have, or just that everything may be a little larger on-screen?

The 34UM95 you've tested would appear a bit sharper than your 24" monitors and everything will be smaller (84% of the size) as you've noticed.

The 34UM65 would be a bit less sharp than your 24" monitors and everything will be bigger (112% of the size).

The sharpness and size of things on the 34UM65 will be almost identical to those of a 27" 1920x1080 monitor.

There are mixed opinions on whether or not that level of sharpness is acceptable.

Here are a few threads I can find:

27" LED - in 1080p. Too low res?

24 or 27 monitor?

24" vs 27"

Thanks for the information. Out of interest, just in case I need it for other monitors, how did you work out the calculations for this, just in case I decide to opt for a 2560x1440 monitor instead.

Thanks for that, seems from those calculations that the 34" I tried with 3440x1440 res has a very similar dpi to a 27" with 2560x1440 which rules that option out sadly, as I'd imagine the font size will be tiny on that too.

I can say that the 34UM65 which is "only" 2560x1080p looks very sharp. Dont be fooled by the fact thats its a 34 inch. Its ultra wide so its actually not as high as a normal 27". Had it myself and it was beautiful, crisp picture. Only had to return due to eye strain(my eyes couldnt figure out what to focus on :P)

Thank you, anyone else got/had this monitor and would recommend it? It literally is between this one now and keeping my existing 2 monitor setup (I've done away with the 3rd monitor as I wasn't using it much!)

Shame the 34UM65 isn't in stock in many places at the moment for some reason (discontinued?). Waiting for OC to stock again.
