hello

monitors specs mention diagonal, eg 24 inches, but I need to know the vertical dimension of a monitor, because I want to read pdf files in my monitor and the book page in its whole height must appear in the screen without having to scroll the vertical bar

why they don't mention this?

thanks

That is determined by the resolution of the monitor, the zoom level of the PDF document and how the PDF is set up. It has nothing to do with the size of the screen. If you look at the resolution of a monitor you're interested in, you can find the most suitable one, giving the best vertical 'real estate', by picking a high second number (i.e. 1920x1200 gives you 1200 vertical pixels).

Given the contrast, price and adjustability of the screen I'd recommend the Samsung F2380 for this task (unless you also require the monitor for games and movies).

This is a Dell 2408WFP 24" monitor with a single sheet of A4 stuck to the top right corner;

As you can see, there is enough room to display two A4 sheets next to each other with the usual toolbar at the bottom. A 23" monitor would also be phyiscally capable of displaying an A4 page at 100% scaling. I am not sure about a 22", but it would probably also be tall enough.

That is a 16:10 monitor is it not? Most monitors are 16:9 and are not as tall as that (which goes back to my original post). I will be testing out a 22" 16:9 next week and will let you know how it fairs on the A4 paper test (although I very much doubt it will have the height).

if its any help i have a 23" 16:9 1920x1080 alienware 2310 screen and with the A4 paper test the paper is 10mm taller than the screen

It's the resolution that's important for the amount of "stuff" you can view on-screen. So, look for a screen that is 1920*1200, instead of 1920*1080. That will give you an extra ~20% of vertical viewing distance.

But anyway, basic year-8 level maths tells you that a 24" 16:9 screen has a vertical height of 11.77", and a horizontal width of 20.92". For a 16:10 screen the height is 12.72" vertical, and 20.35" horizontal. Obviously this does not include the bezel or stand etc.
