Hi,

My son will be getting a gaming PC and PS5 for Christmas and rather than having two separate screens I was wondering if there are any monitors which would support both systems?
Ideally a screen size of 27"+, supporting a PC res of 1440p and PS5 with HDMI 2.1

Thanks :)

Pretty sure no current monitor supports HDMI 2.1, however, there are plenty being announced at the moment but unsure if they will be released in time for Christmas.

I’ve done some research and it appears some LG TV’s can cover both of my requirements. They support NVIDIA G-Sync, VRR up to 120hz and HDMI 2.1

Don't think any of LG small TV's (around 32") support this

Surely that would only be there much larger flag ship TV's which start from around 48"

Correct - only the LG OLED CX has these features and the smallest size is currently 48”. There is still time before I need to buy and there are some new monitors on the horizon which are looking interesting.

What new monitors are you referring to? There aren't many. Asus have the PG43UQ model, but there's confusion around this and if it actually does feature 2.1 or simply has certified compatibility for it - stemming from the fact you can already buy the PG43UQ and it doesn't have HDMI 2.1, so either it's a revised model or a new one coming altogether. Regardless, the panel in this monitor has many flaws, far from ideal.

There is also the Philips 328M1R with 2.1 due next year.

That's it as far as I'm aware. Have you seen others?

It amazes me that the monitor market is so behind.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a 3090. Dont get me wrong if I could get a nice 32" hdr10, 144hz 4k screen. For a reasonable price I'd be all over it.

I'm faced with the prospect of getting something like the asus 43" that's just too big for gaming 2 feet from the screen. A 4k hdmi 2.1 tv, that again is too big, or spending an obscene about of cash on a 27" screen, that is too small for my liking.

Why haven't we got more monitors on the market yet? And why is the tv market so far ahead.

Any eta on a 28-44" 4k 120+ hz screen?

Nope! No Eta. Plus, when they do arrive, you can bet on a £2000-3000 price. It's ludicrous. The LGCX48 is cheaper than these cutting edge monitors will ever be, simply due to their crazy mass production and mass adoption for the new consoles. Enthusiast PC 4K next gen monitor market will be relatively tiny, so premiums will be crazy high.

Damn this sucks. I dont mind paying 1-1.5k max. Gets silly when you're spending 2.5k on a 27" screen.

Surely with the 3070/ 3080 bringing 4k res to the masses there is now going to be a hell of a lot more demand for something more affordable?

Yes, but monitor tech moves at a snail's pace. There aren't any HDMI 2.1 monitors on the horizon that I'm aware of. There are few high refresh 4K monitors on the market full stop, and nothing bigger than 27". 32" is around the corner, but at an exorbitant price, and even that won't have HDMI 2.1. There is the cheaper XB323QK due sometime soon (probably Q1 2021 though), but it's still a pretty bog standard LCD panel outside of being high refresh 4K.

As great as it is that HDMI 2.1 is on the new 30xx series, it's really only good for big (and expensive) OLEDs right now. It will be years before we see HDMI 2.1 on smaller affordable monitors with all the features we'd like, i.e FALD, OLED and HDR 1000+. For the foreseeable future, those things will remain in the domain of the wealthy.

With a handful of exceptions, monitor manufacturers generally only seem interested in churning out super high refresh small panels, with poor or non-existent HDR functionality. If you want the BEST, gaming experience, you have to go for a big OLED.

I doubt we'll get more affordable than the £1480 CX48 (or 2021 model, CXI48?) for some time.

This saddens me immensely. We spent short of £8k on a 77" lg oled c8 tv. 4 months after buying they released the 120hz 4k model. Gutted is an understatement.

I'm just going to have to hold out and wait for a 32" set. The 43 or 48 is just out of the question as I play a lot of fps it will make me a worse at fps. Quite a few video reviews ive seen have said it's just too big to game up close with :(.

I’m surprised too - next gen consoles have been roadmapped for years and yet there are no displays available below 48/49 inch which support the new features. Doesn’t look like it’s going to change for a while either :(
The current offerings are great for lounges and large rooms but surely the largest user base of consoles are the 5-25 year olds, in bedrooms/smaller rooms using them on desk type environments.

In terms of monitors - Hopefully now NVIDIA have cards out soon supporting HDMI 2.1 monitor companies will get their products updated.

I just dont understand why LG one of the market leaders with the TV market hasn't put one out.

Like you said its probably down to the hdmi 2.1 support. Now that's out there let's hope everyone jumps on board.
