Monitor help needed

Hey all,
I recently bought a new Asus 27" monitor and have ran into two problems when trying to use it.

1\ When I try to use the DVI/HDMI cable on its own, the monitor just says "no VGA detected" and wont operate. When I plug the VGA in with the other cable my desktop icons are missing, but the start bar is at the bottom.
When I removed the DVI/HDMI cable the icons reappeared - anyone know why?

2\ Now just using the VGA cable, my screen is really off centre to the left. Even when moving the screen over to the right in the monitor settings (100% over to the right), its still a little too much to the left?.

Any answers on either of the above would be really appreciated

When plugging in the HDMI or DVI cables did you change the input on the monitor? - Daft question.

Hey, I dont know much about monitors, so nope I havent. I take it you mean a setting on the computer?.
How do you go about doing that please?

On the monitor - you will need to manually change the input to DVI or HDMI :)
