Monitor - No Signal

Hey guys, I left my computer on last night and woke at 4AM by the noise of it turning itself off.

Now when I turn the computer on it powers up fine, but the monitor is saying "No Signal" then turning itself off. At first I thought this was my GFX card (nothing fancy, just a 6800GT- I really need to upgrade) but after swapping it out with my old 6600GT it still was the same.

Am I right in assuming it has to be the PSU or the Monitor? Stuck on this super slow 1.8Ghz Centrino laptop with a stunning 256MB of ram.

I can get a lend of a monitor tomorrow, but unable to get a lend of a PSU. Any suggestions? This is really frustrating!

Changed any BIOS settings?
Overlclocked at all?

If so, reset the CMOS Memory.

Nothing like that, thanks though

Dodgy VGA cable? Worth a check.

GF's bringing over her monitor tomorrow so i'll be able to see if it's the monitor at fault.

Another thing, I switched my computer on to see if there was any changed and went to make a cuppa, when i came back it had turned itself off again. I'm thinking PSU trouble? I'll go pick up a cheap one tomorrow to test. I think i'll go ahead and start ordering a new rig anyway now I have 10% off + free shipping a decent mobo + quad core 2.4Ghz should be pretty reasonable.

Just to clarify both the PC and monitor shut off? If the PC is still running can you hear the Windows startup sound? A dodgy graphics driver could cause a blank display over a DVI connection as I have experienced recently.

Both shut off, I can't actually tell if it gets as far as windows as my headphones have a loose connection so I can't hear the sound.

Ok guys, a bit of a bump this is really starting to get to me.

So far i've replaced the PSU (some generic 300watt) with an OCZ 500watt, swapped out the graphics card and tried another monitor.

What the hell could the problem be? Once I power the system on I believe there is one short beep (ASUS P4P800 mobo) then it's just a constant green power light and orange light. It doesn't appear windows is starting either.

Anyone got any ideas? I really need to access my ebanking account.

Do you mean the orange light on the front of the case?
If so unplug all the hard/optical drives, sometimes a faulty drive can cause the machine to stall, as it's beeping once it's unlikely (IMO) to be the ram as normally a serius ram fault will make the machine beep repeatedly or not get as far as beeping.

I read that about the RAM, thanks werewolf. The new PSU I bought only has two IDE device power supplies so I cannot plug my optical drives in at the moment, one hard drive is IDE, other two are SATA. I'll try unplugging them all, then one, then two etc.

Motherboard could have died I guess, how old is it?
Also, do you use surge protector at all?

Did you try resetting cmos? Could be worth a go, if you've not already tried.

My last PC died a sudden death, tried replacing psu, gfx etc. Only way I could finally sort it was new MB, Ram and CPU. Was well overdue a upgrade though. Still a kick in the nuts though, how a system that has been running perfectly suddenly conks out.

You see that's the thing- mine is a well overdue upgrade. I think I bought it in 2003? Maybe 2004... It's an Asus P4P800 P4 2.6Ghz and only 512MB Kingston HyperX. I just don't want to splash out so soon. I was thinking of resetting the CMOS, you just take the battery out, right? I'll try that and uplugging some hard drives.

If not OCUK better get that free shipping back so I can order some goodies :D
