Was thinking of buying a new monitor this year but then it occurred to me with the Oculus coming out next year I intend to be playing a lot of games with that. So really I guess the question is are big fancy monitors going to become less important with systems like oculus hitting the scene from next year.

Is your ring capable of running Oculus ok?

Monitor for me, they aren't a gimmick like the Oculus.

Monitor for me.

I'll get Oculus but I doubt i'll use it much and it's mainly for gaming purposes, a nice monitor will look good when just browsing the internet or looking at pictures etc.

If you like the VR experience, I'd wait for a VR system early next year. I dropped a chunk of change on a Dell 30" last year and really only game on my PC on the Oculus. Would have been better dropping the money on a beastly GPU to replace my crossfire setup.

I don't think big fancy monitors will become less important. I'm upgrading to 3x UHD monitors soon, but when VR headsets come out I'll be buying one, and keeping my monitors for productivity.

This is my thinking, I was considering buying one of new Gsync 144hz monitors but as most of my gameplay has been Elite Dangerous which I think the rift will be perfect for the monitor just seems like a waste.

If I was still using pro tools then I can see the benefit of this but as I no longer do post my 1080p panel seems more than enough for web browsing.

I don't think it's really an either/or choice. I'm hoping to get an Oculus myself and for certain games and situations I'm sure it'll be great but it's not going to replace my main monitor setup. Apart from general web-browsing, desktop work type stuff that a big quality monitor will still be better at I'm sure there will be plenty of times even when gaming that I'm not going to want to fully 'disappear' into the game as I'll still need to be aware of what's going on the real world :)
