First off, Merry Christmas everyone,

I've looked, searched, reviewed, almost ordered, and started again when it comes to choosing a monitor.

So I am now hoping this forum can help me....

I'm looking for a 27" (or larger) 1ms gaming monitor for FPS games along with playing Elite Dangerous.

My current GFX card is a Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X OC 3072MB, my current (old) monitor is a 22" Samsung SyncMaster:

Budget is around £300 and I am not looking to purchase any additional cards etc.

Many thanks in advance.

Some etailers offer a service to ensure you receive a screen without dead pixels, not sure if OCUK offer anything like this though, i've been relatively lucky in the panel lottery thus far.

Ignore the rated response time and look up reviews (if they exist for the model) that do input lag testing - my AOC is rated for "1ms" response time and its more like 7ms average pixel response and 50ms input lag :|

PLS is > than TN in my book.

1ms vs 4ms, that's pure marketing, if you want real numbers go to tftcentral or such site for review.

your card will not give you fps high enough for that 144Hz to be utilized anyway.

What AOC is that if you don't mind me asking? I'm shopping for a screen at the moment and i've eyed up a few AOC screens. Mind you, the user won't be doing much gaming so response time isn't a huge deal anyway, i guess i'm just curious.

Looks like a beautiful screen, but if there was anything that would concern me, it would be the stand, models with the circular stand tend to suffer wobble issues(though not all), it would only be a concern though(check reviews).

As long as your getting >60fps it will give a lot better experience for any serious gaming than 60Hz though regardless of whether your maxing out the fps or not. For Elite Dangerous (assuming its the primary use) then TN probably loses a lot of its potential gaming positives over other monitor technologies as its one game where image quality can really shine and as long as you don't have hideous input lag or smearing as you turn your not at a real disadvantage on a less responsive panel.

One of my monitors is the AOC U2868PQU - terribly bad input lag though some suggestions its an issue with the firmware on early batches/4K TN teething issues :S I wouldn't hesitate to buy AOC but I certainly wouldn't buy this monitor again.

It's a bit of a tradeoff. The higher resolution will give you a more detailed image, which will look great on elite, but you lose the smoothness of the 144hz monitor which would be better for fps games. Keep in mind, however that a 7950 might not be up to the task of maintaining that high a framerate even at 1080p without reducing some settings. The 1440p monitor does also come at the cost of performance since you have to render extra pixels, but one 7950 will be okay for most games without AA applied. So decide which is more important (detail/smoothness) and whether your rig can handle either option.

I think he should stick to 1080p imo :)

Any suggestions/recommendations?

The GFX is only a year old so not really wanting to replace it if I am honest.

Elite Dangerous is the primary game I am playing at the moment so ideally want something that shows off what it is capable of while maintaining high fps and quality.

My current GFX and monitor are currently maxed out at 60fps and rarely drop below 55 with everything set to top settings.

Who would have thought it had become so complicated, i do not recall having all these questions and issues when i bought the samsung lol.

Hmm, I'd got for IPS/PLS at 60Hz before having to suffer a TN panel even if it does run at a higher refresh rate. Personally I think you only really see that advantage of 120hz on fast moving FPS games whereas the benefits of an IPS panel are visible all the time.

+1 vote for the Samsung

Was tempted by it but I have my heart set on a 34" 21:9 3440x1440 panel!

I think you should go for a 144hz monitor even though you wont be able to max it out with your currant card you will certainly appreciate the extra smoothness it gives.. i think buying a 1440p monitor you going to struggle maintaing 60fps:)

These are the two i would consider.

Hmm, actually that's a good point. You may struggle slightly at 1440p with your current GPU depending on the game. I guess it's going to down to whether your priority is gaming/FPS benefits of 1080p/120Hz vs the productivity/image quality benefits of 1440p IPS!
