A mate of mine has a samsung 27" s27A950D and was looking at buying a 7970 lightning

The 7970 doesn't have a dual link dvi - just a single which supports 1920x1200

The Samsung is 1920x1080 but, I believe, needs dual link to support the 120Hz and 3D?

The 7970 and Samsung both have Display Port connectors (well mini on the 7970) - could he use these these for full res / 3D / 120Hz support?

Cheers

Looking at the lightning on OCUK it has dual and single DVI outputs, I have the S23A700D running 120Hz off the dual DVI, but not tried the mini displayport so I can't say if it supports 120 Hz

Hi, thanks for the reply

It's not the boosted edition on ocuk but this one:

http://uk.msi.com/product/vga/R7970-Lightning.html

2x single link - so really it will come down do if the DP will work - cheers anyway

Anyone help please ?

E: also the MSI page shows the Boosted Edition as single link as well :s which card are ou using mate ?

Mini displayport is electrically the same as fullsized displayport just a different connector size so it should support 120Hz fine over DP (if your converting to and from DVI or similiar tho you will need active adapters to ensure enough bandwidth for 120Hz).

I've found some monitor and GPU configurations can be a bit picky about displayport cable length and quality with 1080p @ 120Hz - ideally 1.8m or 2m long if its decent quality if you want to ensure minimum potential for problems.

Cheers Rroff mate - it would be the DP (from monitor) to mini DP adapter (comes with the card) to mini DP on the card

Not sure on cable length - will have to ask him :)

I am using 2 of the HIS 7970's on the OCUK website, great little clockers, they will run at the same speed as the MSI or even more, but then again the MSI will probably run faster also, great cards the 7970's. I also tried the Sapphire 7970 boost edition but for me they seemed a little unstable on the boost bios and also ran hotter stock than my HIS cards.

Fixed it for you :)

You should be able to run this monitor at 120Hz just fine off of DP/mini-DP. Just be aware that the some 750Ds and 950Ds have reports of a buggy DP connection resulting in occasional loss of signal requiring you to turn the screen on and off. It seems to be luck of the draw, and is not in any case a HUGE problem, but it would bug the hell out of me personally. Also, Samsung has recently discontinued these monitors, so if you were to suffer from this issue you could have trouble finding a replacement under warranty

:D

So it looks like a decent under 2m cable from the monitor DP port, through the DP to mini DP adapter into he GPU should work ?

Longer cables may work perfectly fine I mentioned it as I've run into problems with it when carrying a 120Hz signal over DP on more than one occasion. You can also get cables that have mini DP one end and fullsize the other.
