Well my monitor died last night and have replaced it with a new one, although I'd still like to use the broken one aswell.

Is having the monitor repaired worthwhile if even possible at all, and are there any decent places to have it repaired in Birmingham?

The monitor itself is a Samsung SM225MD. It was working fine and all of a sudden went blank. It still comes on and displays a picture for about a second then goes off although you can still see the backlight is on just no picture so to speak.

I wouldn't mind fixing it myself on the cheap but I have no idea whats wrong with it or how to find out. Any ideas?

I might be worth just opening it up and checking for any popped or bulging capacitors. If you find some it should just be a matter of replacing them providing they have not taken anything else out.

yeah I'm having a look at some videos, just need some direction on what area I should be looking in.

Could a capacitor be causing the problem I described or something else in there? I don't know much at all when it comes to circuit boards etc.

Look over all the caps in the system, they should all be flat if they aren't then you need to replace them, it's one of the more common issues. Second is dry joints which usually just need to be resoldered. Without having the monitor in my hands I can't give any more specific advice but those 2 issues above are common issues with most circuit boards and are visually obvious so I always check those first.

just make sure the caps have discharged before you stick anything metal in there.
I remeber an old health and safety video, 20 years ago, showing old crt TVs that stored 27,000 volts in the caps for 2 days and they stuck a demonstration screwdriver in there. The damn thing vapourised.

well after looking over the board 4/5 out of the 11 capacitors are bulging so I guess these will have to be replaced although I might just replace all of them.

Where's the best place to get capacitors?

Do the job?
