Monitor sizes

Right, want to buy a monitor, but not sure if I want to go 20 or 22".

My existing 4:3 17" (16" viewable) CRT monitor has a viewable dimension of 324 (w) x 243 (h) mm.

The monitors I've been looking at, are of a 16:10 ratio.

Please could somebody show me how to work out the viewable width and height sizes?

aren't tft/lcd measured differently to crt?

Yup, CRT 'square' are 4:3 and TFT 'square' are 5:4. WS is then 16:10 on a TFT and 16:9 on a TV.

I've been looking into a new monitor to replace this CRT and I've finally decided on this LG model

It's the 2ms response and the 3000:1 Contrast Ratio that did it for me. Should be picking it up sometime next month.

And you lose at least an inch on a CRT because it's under the bezel and not visible. TFTs tend to quote visible size.

Just out of curiosity, what graphics card do run it from? Do you think my 512MB 7900GS will struggle with the 1680x1050 res?

Depends what you're running on it? You might not get very high settings in games, but everything else is fine.

Someone in the graphics card forum might be able to give you a clearer idea if you want to know which games it will handle.

Theres loads of 4:3 TFTs, the Dell 2007FP for example.
