Monitor upgrade for new GPU?

Hello all,

I've just added a new GPU (Radeon R9 390) to my system and, finding myself with a bit of Christmas money leftover, have started to think about upgrading my monitor.

I'm currently on an ASUS VH226h (22inch, 1920x1080, around 7 years old now so well overdue replacement) but I'm frankly overwhelmed by the array of options out there.

I'm thinking of going for something like a 24inch, 1920x1080, 60Hz monitor with IPS panels. My reasoning being as follows:

Yes, 27inch would be nice, but I gather that 1440p is more or less a minimum for a monitor that size. As I'm not going to upgrade my GPU for another 5-6 years, I anticipate that even with a 1440p monitor I would be doing most of my gaming at 1080p, particularly in the second half of the GPU's lifetime. Therefore I'm leaning towards 1080p rather than 1440p and consequently 24inch rather than 27inch.

Also, there seems to be a trade-off between panels and Hz. Or at least 144Hz IPS monitors are super expensive. I play some FPS games but also a lot of strategy type games (Cities Skylines, Civ etc) and would generally favour a better picture over higher frame rates - plus it's not a gaming exclusive monitor but used for pretty much everything else too (work, TV, films). So when it comes down to it, I'd plump for IPS over 144Hz capability.

Would really appreciate any advice. Am I being too conservative in going for a 24inch 1080p monitor, for instance? In truth, financial constraints mean that I've been looking at the ~£200 price point. Perhaps I should be saving up for something better?

Also, any suggestions of specific models would be most welcome.

Thanks for your help.

I would absolutely save up for https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lg-2...e-widescreen-led-monitor-black-mo-128-lg.html

Freesync means longevity, while ultra-wide will just be a better experience, plus it's ips and 1080p (ish). Best buy by far.

Thanks for that. I must say the ultra-wide does look tempting but it's the kind of thing I'd really need to try out first. I can imagine being amazed; I can also imagine being underwhelmed. Does seem remarkably cheap for a freesync monitor.

If you want IPS then consider something like this below

I2470PWQU 24" 1920x1080 IPS Widescreen LED Multimedia Monitor

Cheaper than the Dell IPS but has 5ms (Dell are 8ms).

However considering your GPU in your shoes I would go for this TN and take advantage of Freesync and 144mhz over visual quality -

G2460PF 24" 1920x1080 TN FREESYNC 144Hz 1ms Gaming Widescreen LED Monitor

Thanks for the response. Can I ask why you'd go for the freesync/144mhz over the IPS? Is the smoothness a big difference maker for casual, non-competitive gaming?

Freesync will definitely make a difference, even for casual gaming (no screen tearing, smoother gameplay), 144hz, it's a 50/50 whether you'd notice outside of FPS games.

Thanks for the input, guys. I think I'll probably put off any decision for a bit, hopefully have a bit more cash to spend and perhaps prices will have dropped too. The new GPU has made such a difference on its own that I can deal with a smaller-than-I-would-like monitor for another six months or so.

Cheers.
