Monitor upgrade from 60hz to 144hz and is it worth it?

Hi all, I'm in the market for a new monitor, i was looking at around £200

I mainly play MMORPG's and Action RPG's like POE/D3, I heard lots of good things about higher hz monitors. I run:

2500k @ 4.4ghz
8g ram
120g SSD
Asus GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU II OC Gamer 2048MB

I realise it might not be the most kick ass system anymore but im playing at 1080p and every game i run on max with no difficulty.

I was looking at one of the following: all around £170

AOC G2460FQ 24" Widescreen 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor - Gunmetal
AOC G2460PQU 24" Widescreen 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor - Gunmetal
Acer Predator GN246HLBBID 24" 144Hz 1ms Gaming Widescreen Monitor (out of stock now:( )

So A) which monitor would you recommend? B) have you upgraded from 60hz and seen an improvement?

Personally I would say yes, 100% Yes, Everything feels so much smoother and more fluid.
The Acer Predator is a fantastic monitor and I highly recommend it, A work friend of mine has it and it's a joy to game on :)
 
I don't think it's worth it getting a 120/144 Hz monitor for those types of games. IMO you'd be better off investing in a better all round monitor with better colours / viewing angles etc.

I have a 2560x1440 Dell IPS screen as well as a 1920x1080 120 Hz screen (also an avid D3 player :)). There's no way on earth I would play Diablo on the 1080 screen over the 1440 screen. The Dell 1440 monitor has a better panel for colour reproduction and IMO offers a better gaming experience over the 120 Hz screen.

120 / 144 Hz is better suited to FPS gaming and you sacrifice some vividness with colours for the smoothness and fluidity of the higher refresh rate. You can of course gain benefits from running a higher refresh rate in other games too but I think personally it isn't worth it for those types of games.
 
I'd agree with Rusty, if you don't play FPS much or at all you might be better off going for a nice 1440 or 1600p IPS screen to make action RPG's look nicer. Don't know about POE but Diablo does colours really well and an IPS screen will only bring them out more.
 
I personally didn't find the jump in refresh rate from 60hz to to 120hz to be very noticeable at first, but after a couple of weeks of 120hz gaming I found it quite easy to tell by eye if a fast moving scene was running at 'only' 60fps. For slow paced games, the benefits of 120/144hz screens diminish and a monitor with good colour accuracy and wide viewing angles may serve you better.
 
I took the plunge and got a 144hz screen. due to stock issues I got the AOC G2460PQU, the acer was out of stock still and no longer listed for some reason?

I still play some FPS's between my MMO's/RPG's which I should have probably said in the first place. Also some MMO's while not quite as fast paced as FPS's can be pretty hectic if you pvp

The reviews said the AOC colour reproduction was actually quite decent for a TN screen although probably not close to a real IPS screen.

Soon find out if I made a good choice.

Thanks all! this is probably the biggest debate since AMD vs Nvidia.... every page or forum i read had such mixed feelings on IPS vs 120/144hz TN.... guess with the 144hz IPS coming it wont be an issue other than ££££
 
'feel' is an odd thing to quantify but having tried a 4k monitor at 30hz the desktop felt weirdly laggy. Since i've got a 144hz monitor I have to say I find the same going back to 60hz. TBH though it's more what you get used to - never use 144hz and you'll never notice it (or perhaps you won't anyway seeing as it's so subjective).

Enjoy. You'll definitely still get the benefit of 120/144 Hz in other games than FPS games but it's in those games that the difference shows up most. TN panels at 120/144 Hz have improved somewhat since I bought mine with regards to colours but I don't think personally it's worth it over an IPS for anything other than FPS games. Your money, your choice though. Enjoy :)
