Monitor upgrade?

Apologies in advance for the cluelessness (if there's such a word) of this post - however, I hope you will take pity on me and offer me some advice/guidance...

Up to now I've always used 'hand me down' monitors and so have never really considered the pro's and cons of buying a new monitor. However, having just finished sorting out the office at home I'm mulling over whether I should treat myself and upgrade. My current monitor is an NEC E243WMi and my current PC is an i5 4690 / R9 290 / 8 Gb RAM. The PC is used mainly for gaming and realistically I have an upper limit on spend of £350. My questions are really:

1. Is my current system capable of running a higher resolution that 1920x1080?
2. Will a potential £350 upgrade give a significant improvement on my current monitor?
3. Am I in fact better off waiting until I upgrade the graphics card before upgrading the monitor?

Again - sorry if theses questions appear naive - hope someone can assist...:D

Thanks for the reply :) In terms of gaming - I don't play much FPS-wise, more strategy/RPG with the odd bit of Elite and Rise of Flight thrown in for good measure. So, from that I assume that IPS would be better than TN.

The LG monitor you linked looks interesting - I assume that the height of this is broadly similar to the height of my current monitor but clearly, somewhat wider.

Out of interest - is this the model you have? If so - what were the key features which made you select this model and how has it performed? Also - how significant is the Freesync support in terms of performance?

In the meantime, I'll go and have a good read of the 21:9 thread and ponder.... :)
