I have a ViewSonic VX2025 monitor that is running at 60hz but I see an option to change it to 75hz but when I select this all I get is a black screen.
Someone told me I need a HDMI cable as DVI only supports upto 60hz. Is this true and would I notice any difference in 75hz over 60hz?

You have been misinformed it would seem. HDMI and DVI will both support 75Hz refresh rates at the same resolutions. At your monitors native 1680 x 1050 resolution 60Hz is the maximum supported refresh rate. You can only use a 75Hz signal at 1400 x 1024 or select lower resolutions.

At the native resolution of your monitor (1680x1050) the maximum refresh rate supported is 60Hz.

75Hz is only supported at resolutions up to 1280x1024.

Stick to the native resolution at 60Hz. It'll look a lot better than a non-native resolution.
