Monitoring software for Android phone?

So young'un (well, soon to be 15) doesn't have a smart phone, which is understandably top of the birthday list.

Phones in the past have been abused and taken away. At the point where it's silly for him not to have one, but want to be able to monitor it.

Google searches are next to useless with all the dodgy programs it comes back with. Does anyone currently use any software that enables you to remote check things like internet usage, camera / text usage etc?

Webwatcher seemed to be the only legit one I could find, but was quite hefty at $99. Looking for something like that but ideally a little less costly.

There are good reasons behind not being able to just take the plunge with full on trust with the phone which I would rather not go into here, so only so much as to say I don't want him to be without a phone anymore but it does need to be monitored somehow.

Wouldn't any constant monitoring hammer the phones battery? Does seem quite intrusive without knowing the circumstances. What about just a very simple pay as you go phone with no internet/camera etc? It would make his life more convenient, but might stop him from doing whatever it is he did before?

Without root he will know it's actively being monitored as you can't hide or mask any such apps out of the box.

Really the best solution is to work on resolving the trust issues, as harsh as it may sound.

Exactly this.

Fortunately Android was designed this way to prevent third party tools sneakily being installed without a users knowledge.

If it's only the internet/text usage you're after, can't you look on the account details?

Without being too nosey... Why are you keen on monitoring internet/text usage? I'm sure plans can be locked down nowadays so if he uses his 1Gb internet allowance in the first week, then he learns to go without until the month has finished, same applies with texts.

I would have thought you'd be more interested in things like GPS tracking, which oddly enough is much easier to track.

Here's an example from my Three account...

It isn't real-time monitoring, but i think it refreshes at most once a day.

Just get him a sim only deal with a limit no picture texting. Job done.

3 payg still does unlimited data and Whatsapp sends free pics I'm sure also that some networks will let you put a limiter on so the user can't go above contract, also on 3 iirc payg it's age appropriate untill you prove you are over 18.

I'm sure other companies do it, but I seem to recall from the times I've had Tesco SIMs that you can see details of everything to do with usage e.g. time and length of every phone call, time a text was sent, amount of data usage per connected session etc.

It won't show sites accessed and so on, so if he's been visiting hard core scud sites or something then this isn't going to help much.

If his use of the internet is the specific concern, I'd echo the comments above about not getting mobile access until he can be trusted. Part of growing up and all that.

Smut filters are generally opt out anyway so all will be blocked by default unless the account holder turns it off.

Networks usually provide a breakdown of texts and calls (duration etc)

Monitoring the camera usage seems a bit strange...
