monitors or speakers

what amp are you using to drive the hifi speakers?

Lol :) It's so small you can't see it but it is there. Sonic Impact t-amp. It's the thing to the right of my monitor that looks like a prop from Star Trek, behind the mouse bungee and next to the cable modem. Yep, that's an amp.

They're very good too, they're only £25 (+£20 for a power adaptor) but I fancy they'd match the sound of any sub £150 amp. Read up on the net about them, some people reckon they're even better than that. The size makes them ideal for a PC. Only 15W but I've never used mine over half volume (and that's with windows and wave volume on 50%), so they're not short on volume. Also they use little power.

I'm using hi-fi speakers as nearfield monitors and they work just fine -

Slightly off topic but where did you get that desk from?

I can confirm that the T-Amp is excellent fot its size and price. Just make sure that the speakers are fairly "sensitive" (89db or more).

Desk looks like mine - from MFI.

Those speakers should really be embedded (spiked) into the desk or, better, attached to the wall to stop movement caused by the cones, otherwise you're defeating the their purpose.

You're also going to get a fair bit of resonance because of the desk surface.

It looks like fish99 is using isolators.

Yeah, MFI desk from about 5 years ago. They don't sell it anymore but argos have something similar for £50.

Using double cork pads to isolate the speakers from the desk. The metal bits you can see are built into the speakers, then about 3 mm of cork under that. Works better than the blu-tac I was using before but still not perfect. Consider it a work in progress :p

It's not for really serious music listenning though, I have a better setup for that, it's more for games and the odd MP3. Does a surprisingly good job with music though.
