Monitor's: Swift or UltraWide

I'm sort of in the same position as I need a decent monitor to finish my new setup, bit worried with a lot of complaints with the swift especially at the price, would love to go ultrawide but am worried as it's for gaming only will all my games support 21:9 out of the box, and ideally I'd like gsync to get the full benefit from my rig, at this rate though I can see me settling for a £300 1080p 144hz monitor and just wait it out for a year or so until the market settles and enjoy games at max settings without the hassle

Just my 2p worth.

I recently bought a 40" UHD A399U monitor (it's a bit quicker than the Philips 40") as a bit of an experiment as I wasn't sure what I wanted to replace my aging Asus 27" 144Hz 1080p TN panel. Could I live with 60 Hz well yes so long as the game config averaged above 60 fps. I could then use frame limiting or enable V-Sync.

So in Witcher 3 I play in a 3440 x 1440 borderless window (coincidentally it measures 33.5" so close to the up coming 34" 21:9 panels) on a UHD desktop. GTA V will play at the full 40" UHD if I play at high settings. Dying light was OK at 3440 x 1440 but I actually preferred a full 40" 2560 x 1440 aspect ratio as I felt more immersed in the frantic 1st person chases through the city.

So as already mentioned it may depend on you preferred game styles as to what size shape and resolution you end up with. I'd love a big 120Hz 4K UHD VA (or OLED) panel right now but it but it's not possible so for me a 34" 21:9 1440p 100Hz VA panel would be my choice, might not be so far away too.

Bimble, did you get the A399U shipped from Korea?

Yes Dream Seller on Ebay have a very good reputation for quick shipping and customer support. They don't charge extra for shipping and can usually deliver in 5 working days.

20% tax will be added to the listed price on Ebay by FedEx at the point of import to the UK. Small chance they may add up to 15% import duty as they see the huge box and think it's a TV!

It's not as it doesn't have any tuner electronics so should be classed at 0% import duty. They did that to mine but it was pretty easy to get them to adjust the charges back to 0% though it takes a couple of weeks via email.

There's actually a revised model the A409U which has the glossy glass removed and a better surround finish. Cus yeah I had to deglass my monitor of all the things to reduce the glare!

One of the main pros of Multi Monitor setups for gaming is you can have info/comms/other on a secondary monitor and still be able to view them with a fullscreen game running. A single large panel does not allow you to do this.

If your end game is multiple desktop applications at once then a single large monitor will work. It becomes completely moot when you fire up a fullscreen game however.

Additionally super wide aspect ratios are HUGELY niche and are unlikely to ever be adopted as a standard gaming resolution. Expect compatibility issues.

I think I'm going to end up with the 4k Philips at this rate, it's a really good price point at the moment.

Also it's very similar in height to a 23/24" portrait monitor.
