Monsta 500R - The further adventures of Petey

Argh... I'm finding it difficult to settle on this tubing/fluid thing.

After a bit of consideration, I'm liking the black tubing/chrome fittings with either white or clear fluid idea a lot more. Problem is, opaque tubing means that you can't see any air bubbles and I had a bit of a task with bleeding the 360 rad last time. Clear tubing helped a lot with that.

Normally I'm not a fan of black tubing, but if it's done right, it can be rather tasty.
This guy has a very similar layout/colour scheme to mine, albeit in a smaller case and it looks great:

On the other hand, green UV tubing with white fluid/black fittings and a couple of UV cathodes could look sweet, if a little 90's/early 2000's if you know what I mean ;)
I'd be blacking out any of the visible blue pci slots in either case.

So, safe, clean and classy looking option with a little more effort to bleed, or take a chance on what could end up looking either garish or awesome?

Oh, and apart from the res, I'm not really looking to illuminate the interior as there's nothing to show but an utterly un-pimpworthy mobo.
Also, there will be a big window on the panel soon.

Uncle Petey requires your counsel, my friends. Play your part and share in the glory! :D
Any other suggestions?

Like it!

Not sure I'd need any paint as the tape does fine by itself.
Is this kind of what you had in mind? I used milk of course :D

It'd look like a liquorice allsort rig, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Yeah, just wrapped some tape on a spare bit of tubing and there you go :)

Could look even better with narrower tape, say half the width in a tighter spiral?

You're right. I was thinking the same thing.
Right now, the only real colour comes from the ram leds.

It's gonna be a fine balance to get this done right without looking too tacky. I also wouldn't want it to look like an anti kink coil as I think they look terrible. (no offence to anyone :))

Just tried it with a tighter spiral showing only around 3-4mm of tubing. It looks a lot better and means the tubing is almost all black.
It kinda matches the led slats on the ram. Perhaps a hint of Alien exoskeleton about it too :D

Think I might give it a whirl and leave the coolant clear. The glass of milk look with the res doesn't work for me.

Edit: Tried a few variations including a couple of thin strips in a nice spiral and while they looked good on the tube, they didn't look so hot in the case.
It makes it look a little too busy I think.
Screw it, gonna go with black tubing/clear fluid/chrome fittings and take extra care with bleeding that big sucker :)

And god help my squealing wallet... I have all kinds of concept ideas to send to Coldzero. Where will it end?

Lol, I ended up ordering both the green and the black tubing coz it'll bug me if I can't see how each would look :p :o

What will it be? Black tubes and chrome fittings or green tubes and black fittings?
Will Petey totally chav out, or will he regain some class?

Prace bets NOW!

I'm thinking it'll probably go that way. The black n chrome would be cool and understated, but the green n black would pop nicely. Well, hopefully anyway.

M-M-M-M-MONSTAAA CLUUUUUUB!

Seriously, we need a theme tune or something :D

Btw, my other 240 will be on the MM soon. Just a heads up :)

Replied to your trust, Illuz.

@silk300
I should mention that the bottom of the case needed cutting to allow the rad to sit low enough to line up with the fan screw holes.
Sorry I didn't post pics of that.

In all honesty, I didn't do the greatest job with the tools I had and made the hole a little too wide on one side. Right now, the gap is covered with a strip of electrical tape and it's next to invisible.
If you were to take greater care than I did and perhaps use a dremel, it'd be a piece of cake to get it bang on.

Or you could just cut new screw holes about 5mm or so higher than the existing ones and have the fans sit slightly higher.
If you cut the floor, you can still drain the rad from the bottom port though.

Here's what I've been up to :)
I'll get some daylight pics tomorrow.

The UV glow looks a lot nicer in person. Blast my crappy camera...

I switched the front rad to exhaust and put the original mesh back without the inner filter mesh and it doesn't seem to restrict the air too much.
The 5.25" bezels were replaced with some lian li's I had lying around, again, with the filters removed.
I tried a little experiment with cutting an oval hole and lining it with edge trim, but seeing as they didn't restrict too much anyway, I didn't bother with the rest.
There were plans to get Coldzero to make me a custom, two-tone front mesh to cover the entire length of the front panel up to the fan controller, but they haven't got back to me and this seems fine, not to mention free :D

I originally had another UV cathode under the GPU which gave all the tubing a uniform glow. Looked great, but it caused interference issues with the graphics output. Scared the crap out of me. Thought my card had gone belly up  but it was ok after removing the light and giving it 5 minutes. Phew!

Oh, and I got some custom cable extensions made which actually work out cheaper than the Bitfenix extensions I had there previously... Alas, the green stripes aren't UV reactive, but they look nice in daylight when the UV's off.

Thanks a lot mate. Not sure it deserves such high praise, but I'll take it :)

Replaced the pics with slightly better ones. Wish I had a DSLR... My phone just isn't cutting it.

ED; Forgot the temps :o

Looping heaven for half an hour with the GPU at 1200/1800 1.238v and the cpu at 4.5ghz:

GPU core: 37°C
VRM1: 42°C
VRM2: 35°C

Not sure about the CPU in heaven tbh, but an hour of prime95 @4.5ghz 1.376v (yeah, auto voltage...) gets to about 45°C.
Room temp around 20°C.

Hehe, it's called the Monsta 500R for a reason :D

Seriously though, they're great but I doubt that they offer significantly better results than a good 45-60mm rad. I just had to have them is all.

Ps, I checked out that slightly bent fin and it's so minor, it really wasn't worth mentioning. There when you want it mate :)

Cheers mate.
Yeah, I can't afford a massive ssd right now either, so I just stuck the hdd in an external caddy and tucked the ssd behind the front rad.

Btw, the top rad looks far bulkier in the pics than it does in reality.
Could've been conventional and stuck a 30mm rad inside the case or gone with a 45mm and it'd only have stuck out by 10mm. Screw convention I say

:) It was great fun. Shame I'm pretty much finished now...

Not sure what's going on with the res lighting though. In the first build it lit up really well, then I put the blue dye in and it dulled it down. Now I've gone back to clear liquid and it's barely visible even in low light.

Baffled... Might have to stick another lighting module in the top cap and see how it looks.

Love that build petey! I must find a way to get one of those rads in my cosmos II! They look epic! :D

Yeah i love the chunky look of them, overclockers will have to send out chunky chocolate bars with um when they start selling um, harribo just wouldnt do them justice. :)

Yeah, Alphacool certainly found a way to make rads sexy :D Wait till Nickolp1974 builds his 420/420/360 uber rig using white monsta's. Gonna be awesome.
Complimentary chunky kitkats would be a nice touch eh?

very nice is it just me tho, when i look atthe spout coming off of the pump to go back up it looks like in the pics it isnt pushed onto the barb to far or is it just a trick of the uv light?

Heh, the tube's pushed all the way down :) It's partly a trick of the light and probably more because there's a hose clamp covering the bottom half.

Btw, anyone have any idea why the res led's have gone dim? It's not a power draw issue afaik, as I put a wattage meter on there and it could be pulling 80-360w and they're dim regardless.
They only share the molex with the cathodes and this started before I did the UV. They were nice and bright when I first installed them...
