I would say get the best you can without going overkill. So an i7 and 290cf or 780sli. You would still have around £1/1.5K to keep in your pocket for any upgrades.

i think 3.5k is not as overkill as you guys think since he wants speakers and other bits of hardware.
add a decent sound card, a set of corsair SP2500 2.1 speakers, Razer orbweaver (gamepad). maybe dual or tri monitor setup since he plays a lot of fps. and the price looks pretty reasonable for a full setup

Add to that the fact that he seems to want a pre-built monster gaming PC and I'd be inclined to agree.

That's the smart way of thinking.
Nothing wrong in going for an OTT rig if that's what you want, but dropping the spec will not really make much, if any difference to actual performance.
I see no need to spend any more than £2k to get a PC that can run games well. Whatever you buy will tend to become "old" within a couple of years or so. Holding a grand or so back is a good idea in order to buy the latest high end graphics card when the time comes.
Having said that, I do shop at Aldi !
