Hello,

Me and my wife are talking about which type of education we want out son to go into when he reaches age and we were just wondering if anyone has children within any of these schools and if so could you provide some information on what there like and how you feel your child is learning in them?

Thanks

Do you want your son to be a racist? If not, then I'd probably steer clear of Steiner.

I forgot the fire elves - forgive me!

Friends of ours have their little one in a Montessori Day Care. She's 4 and enjoys it to the exact extent that our 4 year old does in a non-Montessori Day Care. If you know nothing about it then you should go along and speak to them because the answers you get on here will be strongly tainted with personal bias, exactly like this one.

This is the truth.

Also, watch this re: Steiner.

Are these the only you would consider?, I would go along and see a few, talk to the organisers and view them in action for a while, then decide. Talk to the parents if you can. To be honest I have only heard of Montessori and they were not very good in our area, but that doesn't mean others are not...I have never heard of Steiner.

We are more then open to other schools, just with these 2 types of schools being the only real "Alternative", we want to delve a little deeper.

What about a prep school?

Nothing is stopping us, we are just checking out our options.

One thing that is very important to us is that our son is shown how to learn for him self through discovery and play, and not through rote learning.

You will not find the answers you need by asking us for our opinion. Choosing how your child will be educated and by whom is a very personal decision and should be made after you've weighed up all of the options open to you.

Go to the places you're considering and see what they do and how they interact with the children. They'll be glad to see you and you'll get to see the real life aspect of education rather than just their pretty brochure.

You should not be basing your child's education on what we say. I don't even know how this could be a thing you're considering.

[FnG]magnolia, We are not basing his entire education on a few people's opinions. We are asking for opinions so we can have a well rounded view. I understand that peoples opinions are biased, but they are still useful.

We were hoping for personal experiences really.

I can't say I ever understood people's issue with state education, if I'm honest. I'm not one of those "never did me no harm" lot, quite contrary I think it did me the world of good, regardless of being at the really shabby end of the league tables.

May not be a popular opinion, but ho hum. :)

Your well-rounded view will come from going out and seeing the education in practise. Our personal experience will almost certainly not mirror your personal experience.

tl;dr - get out there and see who does what and if you like it and it works for you and your child.

Me and my wife are both state educated and I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, just the method of rote teaching is something we believe is not an effective way to learn. We also want to encourage our son to learn for himself, to be enthusiastic about learning and to foster imagination and creativity - things we feel state education does not provide as well as the above mentioned schools.

Personally I think our education system is excellent but only if the child is parented correctly and they make sure their kids don't hang around with idiots.

Whats wrong with a normal school?
