Ok, so quick question really....

Just got some letters through from my landlord next academic year for uni, with all the information and everything in it.

Anyway, we have been told that between the 4 of us we'll have a limit of 200gb/month. We can upgrade it if we want, but obviously that would cost...

Do people reckon it would be worth upgrading? Or could we get away with it?

1 of us doesn't use the internet for anything I'd call too excessive.
1 of us streams music and videos quite heavily
The other 2 do quite a bit of online gaming, and stream videos.

So yeah, will 200gb/month be enough?

kd

Depends on the bit rates of the streams, but 200GB is quite a lot.

Can you not see how you go and upgrade if you need to?

You'll only go over 200GB if you regularly use torrents/usenet, or if you decide to re-download your Steam back-catalogue.

200GB is plenty unless you're intending to make daily use of on demand services such as game downloads, HD movie rental/streaming services and, of course, much not-so-legal activity.

If your anything like half sensible its more than plenty... being student tho I guarantee you'll have atleast one slob who leaves torrents running 24x7 unless bitched at repeatedly, leaves music streaming even when not listening to it, redownloads entire steam library after a windows reinstall instead of backing it up before hand and so on.

Even with heavy iplayer streaming, etc. you'd struggle to top 200gig with fairly sensible internet useage from 4 people.

Who is it with?

Might be worth upgrading, depending upon your mileage. According to my xfer logs I easily go past 200GB p/m as I transfer a lot of data between my PC here and my server at home in the form of backups and when I'm archiving old stuff I don't need atm.

Bearing in mind many new titles on Steam these days are >10GB download as well, not hard to quickly rack up enormous transfer bandwidth. If you're living with others who do a lot of HD quality streaming, torrenting, Usenet etc then definitely worth upgrading.

We're with Virgin on their Large cable broadband package, gives us unlimited bandwidth at 20mb/s (lol jk, we've never had it faster than 4mb/s).

What happens if you go over the 200GB? Traffic shaping, letter telling you to stop or charges for each GB over the limit?

If it's either of the first two, just stick with the 200GB and see if you go over it. It's difficult to know how much you use unless you regularly measure your usage, so just test it for the first month.

you could get away with it if you monitor your usage with DU meter and not download excessively. 1.6gb a day limit per person.. thats actually not a lot at all! if any of you start downloading 700mb+ files or 4gb files/games and do it more than once in a blue moon then you will go over the limit.

for e.g. yesterday i watched a tv EP and a film on iplayer and did a small amount of browsing of normal webpages, with no youtube or video clips and used 1gb

200 GB/month

We only get 40GB/month :(

Make sure you do monitor the bandwidth those in case someone is routinely backing up the internet. I've found NetWorx good for monitoring monthly usage across multiple pcs and it's useful if your router doesn't have this facility.

Let's hope they all have the same taste in porn and the op hasn't got a fetish for fatties!

Christ, the things you can stumble across browsing through another dude's collection...

Come to think of it, the things another dude could stumble across browsing through MY collection...

Personally I'd say its not enough, I go through about 250GB a month, about 100GB of that is torrents the rest is regular web traffic/downloads/games and streaming.

Putting streaming into perspective 1 hour of BBC HD is about 1.6GB, 1 Hour of regular quality is 700MB. As said before with the 1.6GB allocation per person per day, I think its really pushing it when factoring all other Internet usage on top of that.

150GB of 'regular' web traffic? Just so you know it's summertime now and, until recently, the weather's been great. Bright, sunny days, fresh air, girls in strappy tops, it's all out there.

Hang on a minute - are you in a shared house or something?

I've been incredible frugal lately as I don't have a fixed line yet (should be a different story tomorrow!), and I've had to rely on stupid three mobile broadband with a 5Gb limit. Despite this stupid limit, I've still managed to watch a few iPlayer programmes, play Crossfire for hours upon hours and Youtube videos.. cough and porn.. cough...

Again, I was frugal, but it wasn't crippling - I would however say, that at most I would ordinarily use 5Gb per day. That's 1 iPlayer programme, torrent, Youtube, gaming, uploads on to FB, etc.. Therefore I say that 200Gb is enough (if not more) for one person...

Might be a different story if you're in a shared house..
