Moped or Bike?

Probably should have done this when I was 16, but I'm looking to get "driving", quite fancy a moped or a bike.

I've got a provisional driving license, if that's any help. I'll need to do CBT, but the question is shall I do that and get a 'ped and have that for a few years or should I do the CBT then move onto a light motorcycle license, or even a full bike license?

What sort of figure should I be saving for? I haven't been able to find much about pricing online, other than general ballparks of £80 upwards for the CBT. Then the moped or bike itself. http://www.begin-motorcycling.co.uk/costs.htm How accurate are these costs?

Finally, insurance. I can't really do third party on a parent's policy (like some sites suggest) since my Mother doesn't drive (not since she crashed into the number 4 bus about 18 years ago ;) )

Do your CBT & get a 125, Everything is cheap once you have the bike & gear, Insurance, Tax, Petrol.
I think the CBT with bike hire cost me around 120 quid all in but it's a good day out that you'll enjoy & benefit from. It doesn't matter if you haven't even sat on a bike before as the instructors will walk you the whole way through it.

Ask as many questions as you want though as there are plenty of community spirited bikers about to answer you.

You need to check your paper counterpart of your license to make sure first that you have A entitlement in the provisional section. If so you can continue, if not you'll need to apply for that entitlement first, I think you should, I just can't remember if they added it automatically or kept it off and you have to ask for it when applying.

As to what you do for the 125cc that's different from a moped, on the CBT not much, you'll get taught pretty much the same for both, but obviously the 125 will have more power and gears to contend with.

As for what about getting a full license, due to the fact you're currently 18 you can't currently get a full license, and with the changes next year, you can't get a full license till 24 IIRC? I don't know what changes are occurring next year someone else on here will though, luckily I got my full license last year :O

I should be set to go just with my Provisional Driving License right?

"Before you can learn to drive a car, moped or motorcycle you must apply for a provisional driving licence."

Starting to get it now. Since I'm "17 or over", I could theoretically go and do my CBT tomorrow and be able to ride a 125cc for two years.

Then after two years I do a proper test?

Would it be worth getting my own vehicle for the CBT? Presumably a friend could take me and the bike to the test? Finally, what's the law on practising ; assuming I got the vehicle before the CBT could I practice anything other than sitting on it?

Will be easier to do a CBT on the schools bike rather than your own, you won't have to arrange any insurance then.

Like I said, I'm 99% sure you should be ok with the license, but it's always best to double check it's written on your paper counterpart, saves dissapointment when getting to teh school only to be told you haven't got entitlement.

And yes about doing a CBT and riding for 2 years, you have to do the theory and practicals before teh 2 years is up though.

You can do your test any time within the 2 years but have to do a theory, mod1 and mod2. You can't do test if your CBT has ran out though.

Oh and get it all done this year as it's all changing for the worse next year. Making it harder to get on a bigger bike.

And, just reading these changes I haven't got a ******* clue how the new rules work.

I don't know if you pass before January on a 125cc, if you still have a 2 year probation, then you can ride whatever you want. Or if you'll now have to take another test??

It's too confusing, lol.

Planning to do it as soon as possible, I'd prefer to be in the situation where I have all the money for everything ready. That way I can do my CBT, get a bike and get insured in one swoop. Will definitely get the CBT done by next year at the very least.

Do all of it before next Feb seriously. Get it all booked as soon as possible. You won't regret it when you are able to go on a bike sooner than other people are.

I have been told Motorserve have got bits on sale. Seen a textile jacket for £90 but dont know what else they have.

The training school should lend you a jacket, gloves and helmet so you dont have to buy kit ahead of the CBT. Might be worth using their kit so you can hunt for a bargain.

Are leather trousers not neccesary for 125cc bikes? Or are those pieces the essentials?

Well I went to JTS http://www.jtsbikerclothing.com/ & bought myself leather trousers, Boots, jacket & gloves All with built in armour/back protection etc & I was ******* glad I did when I went over the bars across some blind ***** bonnet & across tuther side of the road.
The ambulance crew told me how relieved they were after being called out to a bike accident & seeing me in Full protection.
Guess what ? I was on a Honda NS125F ;)

Do the Kevlar jeans offer enough protection? :)

I'm guessing the leather trousers go over your normal trousers? (this and being the immense heat from riding in the sun in leathers being my main worries!)

From what I understand you must wear a helmet as the minimum but I went and spanked £600 on a full set of textiles with a better back protector.

The other lad that was doing the CBT with me had jeans and hiking boots.

As said before, better safe than sorry!

Textile/leather/Kevlar are all fine pal.

You can get jeans designed for motorcycles which are more than adequate. On a 125, I wouldn't be concerned too much about padding, just that the material won't shred as soon as you hit the floor.

But yeah, you can get gear designs for the summer.

Had a quick browse for the clothing side of it, anyone recommend me some brands to look for?

id go for textile not as strong as leather but far more flexible,go for ones with ce approved armour in the back/shoulders/kees/elbows

i like weise clothing they make good quality stuff, avoid rst they are rubbish, sidi are good for boots ect
