This should proberly go in the PC games section but it poses a moral question, is this video funny or not. Personally i found it quite amusing but i can see the seriousness in it.

The story :

"World of Warcraft, otherwise known simply as WoW, is one of the most popular and successful computer games in history. It is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game that 6 million people pay $10 -15 per month to play. This type of popularity creates a sample size that is large enough to reflect the forces that control it. In Layman's terms, with this many people playing this online game at any given time human nature tends to get a stronger representation.

The first "reality" check was a bug that caused a plague to outbreak and affect people's characters in certain cases instantly killing any player below a certain level.

The second "reality" check was when this group of Warcraft players otherwise known as a guild interrupted a memorial service. Apparently, some dude dies in real life who is a popular WoW player. The people in the game think it would be nice to have a memorial for the player so they log into his account, take the character to a lake, and set it up for everyone to come pay their respects.

A bunch of dudes decide this would be a great time to ambush everyone so they run over a hill, kill the dead guy's character, and then wipe out everyone who was there to show their respects. They filmed the whole thing and put it on the net."

The video CONTAINS SWEARING AND HAS BEEN REMOVED

its the first time ive thought about it, but how much money must they be raking in for subscriptions, $60,000,000 per month

its crazy!

A tad old seen it elsewhere, I found it awesome (the PvP side of things) - makes me want to join, how I miss pvp :( lol

Its only a game, yes. But should anyone do that to anyone's genuine attempt to commemorate the life of a REAL person, no matter how ill-judged the medium?

That was criminally boring, and I didn't even see them reach the funeral. Perhaps if they spent less time playing Warcraft they'd have more time to hone thier shoddy video-editing skills?

Agree with that as well!

I know it is morally wrong but taking a game situation to be the reflection and commemoration of a dead real person is a little over the top.

I love that video. :D It's not big and not clever - but it is funny!

Didn't see the video. But think about how you'd react to a group of gate crashers at a memorial for one of your family members or friends in real life.

I would hope the reaction that scenario should have just conjured up in your mind will easily settle any doubts you might have over who is right and wrong in this case, regardless of the medium. I would support criminal proceedings over it if it were possible under current laws.

You see, this is where I treat real life differently to computer networks and video games. There was no tragedy here, some people lost a credit or a continue or whatever and have to start again from somewhere, there is no comparison to gate crashing a funeral.

Yes, I can see why these people were annoyed, and it annoys me that they take the internet so damn seriously.

Ummm... a guy died in REAL LIFE... not in the game. His friends gave him a memorial in the game that this guy loved. A perfectly reasonable and kind thing for a group of grieving friends to do.

Either you misread the OP or we just have such radically different views on compassion that I have nothing more to say to you.

He means the people that were killed at the memorial lost nothing.

You mean apart from the emotional trauma of having a memorial for a dead friend gate crashed?

Hmm theres a funeral at the church on sunday, maybe I should gate crash that and see if anyone objects? Hmmm?

I realise a guy died in real life, and I hope his family and friends gave him a good send off. If these people who played the computer games with him wanted to show their respect, they could have gone to his funeral.

I'd be acutely embarrassed if some people decided to stage a twee memorial in some computer game for me, I'd actually be happy if some other people got a kick out of wrecking it.

edit: emotional trauma? Now I just can't compute emotional trauma with a sprite on my monitor.

Computer Games don't = real life.

Gate crash a funeral and you're going to mentally scar people for life. Gate crash a MMORPG memorial and people will say "OMG llama!", be hacked off for a while, and then going back to being "l33t lvl 57 Orc Shaman" or whatever the hell the game has, and forget all about it.
The people forgot that it is a game, not a place to have a memorial, and subject to the rules, T&Cs, EULA or whatever of the software it is fully allowed and correct to gatecrash whatever the hell you feel like, screaming "LEEEEROOYYY JENNNNKINNNS" and kill everyone in sight.

But thats in real life! It has reprocussions within the Law etc. But in the game anything goes, could this get out of hand? Will laws be brought in for computer games?! I dont think so to be honest.
