I think the best solution would be to give the proof you do have to your mate that told you in confidence and get him to hand it to the relevant person and say "look, I've been doing a bit of digging as he's a mate and I think it all bull****, here look at what I've found" etc etc.
Keeps you out of the loop and your nose clean and doesn't wreck the confidentiality your mate entrusted to you..
