More airflow

1st a question, I always forget should I have more intake or more exhaust fans? How does it compare to equal in and out?

I have an Antec P182 and was thinking I could cut 2 or 3 120mm holes in the bottom of the upper chamber in the side panel and have intake fans here and cut another hole or 2 in the top of the case and have these as exhausts.

So it would draw air in from the side passed the gfx card and be exausted out the top, would this work or would the gfx card disrupt the airflow and ruin the whole thing?

I'm hoping to get a 4870X2 soon and I want as much air passed it as possible.

Currently my temps drop if I remove my side panel, I have a Sharkoon front intake and the 2 antec fans top and rear and 1 in the lower chamber.

Opinions please.

Of course it is only my opinion but it has worked well for me so far.

As for adding them as side intakes i'd not choose to do that as it may disrupt airflow. I had a P180 and actually added a Scythe Kama bay to make 2x120mm fans at the front and 2xfans at the rear/top. The rear fans were volted down so the case had the positive pressure i described in the link.

I'd also remove the uppr HDD caddy and just have HDD's in the lower compartment. That way you would have direct airflow from the intake blowing straight over your GPU.

Upper HDD caddy has never been in since I had the case.

At the moment im running negative pressure then.

I cant add a kama bay as I have my DVD drive and a fan control so only 2 bays left.

Maybe I should upgrade the Antec rear and top fans as I dont think they shift much air on low, in comparison with my Sharkoon SE 2000 at 7v I'm using as the intake fan.

Dont know where i got this from maybe i made it up in my head when i was drunk. But i've always thought that you needed more exhaust fans so as to remove hot air as quickly as possible, if you have more intake then the air being forced in isn't gonna be expelled as quickly and hang around inside our case getting warm. As i said i may have just made that up, so feel free to correct me if i'm wrong. ;)

Don't worry! TBH i'm not 100% sure.

All i know is that with more intakes, decent airflow and a good exhaust heat dissipation is still good while not introducing tonnes of dust into the system from every panel gap and optical bay.

If the case is sealed well then there would be no problem but as most are like sieves it seemed the best thing to do!

As i said though... i'm not 100% sure... it's just my opinion! :D

GT after some digging around it seems like a lot of people in the know go for a higher intake to exhaust ratio purely for the reasons you stated. Its what i'll be doing on my next build or at least getting the balance better,

Definetly get more air in than coming out, will give you positive pressure.

Something i've never given thought too mate but everyone I've spoke too says the same. Will definitely do it that way from now on.

oh and that antec 300 case I built I put the 2 front fans the wrong way round lol. I was just doing some finishing tweaks before handing it over to my mum and I had bare feet being kept lovely and cool by what should have been 2 intakes.

Instead I set up with 4 exhaust fans. cpu temps dropped from 44c to 26c after I switched them :D

DOH!!

Plastic mesh in front of intake air filter is quite restrictive (~50% of area blocked) so you could make that less restricting.
