Cba'd to do any work this morning so thought I'll bore you lot with how I plan to waste another bucket load of money :p

Just waiting on a fitment date but ordered: -

Spoon baffled sump - prevents oil migration on high g corners

Toda Cat Back Exhaust - to match the manifold, much better design and build & lighter than current HKS system, quieter too so may sort my noise problems out on track. Could gain 2 bhp, could gain 12 bhp - will just have to suck it and see. I regret buying the HKS system but you live and learn.

Earthing kit - for the hell of it, probably do nothing but what the hell

Two hours on dyno to fine tune K-Pro - try to squeze some more power out of it.

Net result should be something along the lines of: -

Decided against going for uprated cams atm, there's just not enough people doing it and those that have done it are people who haven't really done any proper mileage in the cars - so long term affects are unknown. Not really keen on cutting the longevity of the engine in half for the sake of another 20bhp or so.

:)

Pic's a bit big for the boards dude. FF.

I know on my car at PS wheel power was about 33% lower than engine power.

That graph looks pretty similar, although a bit lower losses.

I know a bit of transmission loss is expected (a lot more on 4x4's?) but it does seem a bit high doesnt it?

I do have to say merlin from what I've heard you car is pretty loud! Do you reckon the Toda system will quieten things down quite a bit? I'll be honest I couldn't live with it that loud!

The car recorded 102 db at Donington, needless to say I got my marching orders off the Race Marshall.

I put the bung in the HKS and it got 101 db. So basically I drove half of the track limiting the engine to 6,500rpm. Which was pants.

In all honesty I think most of the noise is actually coming from the engine - not the exhaust. But we'll see. I've still got some options left if the car is still over 98db.

With regards to cyclinder head work - yes there are some gains to be had but nothing substantial - head is nicely worked and hand finished from the factory. Larger bore single throttle body actually loses power, unless you have air hungry cams - which is when it starts to give some gains. ITB's obviosly gain big power but driveability & economy issues.

Have you considered getting the cylinder head gas flowed, ported and polished? Oh and not to forget throttle bodies!

whilst this would undoubtedly be the best option, do you know how much this sort of work costs  ?

I think the only way forward for merlin if forced induction tbh :D you know you want to :D

HT

Throttle bodies can be mapped though so you don't lose drivability, I think you may be getting confused with carbs there.

Turbo it :p

Oooh toys! :D Your car (from what I've heard in your vids) does sound extremely sweet!

As for transmission losses I don't think powerstation are typical. The typical transmission loss of the mx5 is about 25-28hp. And that's RWD (though that's standard with no mods - I believe the tranny losses change with regards to speed of the moving parts etc...). I'm shocked yours should be so high!

Maybe his clutch can't cope with the extra power?

Happytechie, yeah well aware of the sort of costs to have the head flowed buddy. :)

FI is wrong on this car. Spoils the balance, throttle control and the resultant torque makes 1st and 2nd gears a complete joke.

Also, 9psi will kill a K20 stone dead in no time at all. It's a great engine but it's not as suited to FI as the B series.

Comment was really tongue in cheek really :p You don't buy that VTEC monster to shove FI in it. ;) Dying to see it in the flesh.

Aye, I guess the noise is the engine and possibly induction as well a little bit?

I know the B18C4 in my car is pretty loud, even when I ran a Honda peashooter exhaust the engine itself made a fair amount of noise above 5000rpm. I guess the K20A is even louder.

I wouldn't mind seeing it in the flesh either, I'd prefer to hear it in the flesh though as it sounds awesome on some of the videos i've seen of it. :D

What sort of weight do those Integras weigh?

Will see you guys at PS in July then.

Stock weight is 1180 kilos with air con. Mine weighs maybe 1145 - 1150 ish.

Car sounds nothing like the vids from the inside. From inside it sounds like a 2.0 motorbike. :p
